How can I find out how long it takes a detergent bottle to decompose?

If it's plastic it don't decompose. They only way to get rid of it without filling a landfill forever is to recycle it. It gets recycled by the type of plastic it is that is usually found on the bottom in the little recycle symbol. Then check you local recycle center if they take that type of plastic. Your best bet is to buy the refills in cardboard containers and recycle those. Because of that issue I make my own detergent.

It will decompose, but possibly not in your lifetime.

Check with EarthWatch or some other organization that encourages recycling and saving the earth most have websites.

You mentioned 'bottle' so it must be plastic and being that most laundry soap bottles are HDPE #2 that will take at least 100 years. There are many plastics that are estimated to not even begin to decompose for 1,000 years. Of course, no one really knows how long it will actually take to be completely decomposed.

The best thing to do is for everyone to recycle so the plastics can be reused again and again.
