To repair cigarette burns or sparks from fireplace on carpet, first take small scissors and delicately cut away any seared, hard fibers that may be sticking up above the level of the carpet. Buy 3 shades of the cheapest acrylic paint (49 cents ea) close to the carpet color or colors. Use a q-tip to dab on tiny amounts of paint, allowing 15 minutes drying time between applications, until spot is camouflaged. No one will notice the burn!

For the apartment with the nicotine smell...trisodium phosphate (TSP) You can find it in any hardware store. Comes in large or small boxes. Just mix with water.Use it to wash down walls and wood trim that absorb the tar and nicotine from cigarette smoke. Make sure to start at the floor and work upward to the ceiling. Starting at the top will result in the cleaner running down the wall and leaving streaks that will not scrub out. I've been painting for 40 years. This is what I've always used to clean walls and woodwork for painting. Even has a fresh fragrance. Good luck and don't forget to START AT THE BOTTOM!!!
