Favorite Tips from ThriftyFun

I enjoy this site and have shared it with others. My question is: What have been some of your favorite tips?

Sorry that I don't remember who first suggested it, but I love tying a scarf to your keys. It allowed me to use a scarf from my grandmother and I also have had fun buying a few scarfs from thrift stores/yard sales to change for the seasons.

Another one (sorry without knowing who shared it) Homemade window cleaner - this is far better than Windex!

  • 1/2 tsp. of liquid dish washing soap
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 2 cups water

Put in a spray bottle and shake before use.

Looking forward to reading other favorites! God Bless!

Editor's Note: Our #1 tip on the site, with the most positive feedback and traffic, is using Dawn dish soap and boiling water to clear clogged drains.

Just another thought, if you wear contact lenses and drop one, put a pantyhose on the vacuum hose and maybe you will find it.

My favorite tip is using 1/2 liquid fabric softener and 1/2 water in a spray bottle to spray as an anti-wrinkle sray. It's saved me a LOT of ironing! (& $ because the commercial sprays are expensive.)

My favorite one is:
After baking a boxed cake mix clean out the bag and use it as a piping bag for the icing! It so nice to just take your tip out and through the bag away!

The favorite tip I found at this site is an easy way to make ice tea. Just put a few tea bags in a half gallon of water and place it in the fridge. I always thought I had to make the tea with hot water, then refrigerate.

I have learned so much since I have been reading ThriftyFun, my favorite web site.

A tip I use most every day was posted by wbuck341 on 4-2-05. It tells you how to get the air out of a zip lock bag before closing it.

Insert the product in the bag and close it to within 1/2 inch. Hang the bag, with the product hanging down over a counter edge and flatten the portion of the bag on the counter. While holding the bag on the counter top, close the opening the rest of the way. It doesn't remove all but it sure removes most of the air.

I want to share my seven favorite - all tried out tips. These are my favorite tips that were posted that I tried and really are effective!

  1. Using a thin latex glove to run over fabric to collect pet hair very quickly and easily! Worked great.

  3. Put a bit of honey in your shampoo. I did this last night, and apparently honey has something in it that makes your hair moist and soft. As a matter of fact I forgot to use conditioner and my hair came out great!
  4. Put a laundry basket in your trunk to load and unload groceries by picking up the whole basket in 1 trip, to carry into the house, and keeps bags of food from sliding around in your car.
  5. (Weird, but it worked) Use warm water and cornmeal and a soft cloth to wash mirrors. The real tip was to use cornstarch and I confused it and used cornmeal, the mirrors on my closet bedroom doors have never been so clean and dust and streak free. So my boo boo paid off anyway. There was no grittiness or scratches, I dried it all off with a soft cloth. {Buy some cloth diapers and they will last for years, great to have on hand.}
  6. I loved the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I had mark and ground in stuff and on my linoleum floors that nothing would ever clean it. This eraser did it quickly and got it all up!

  8. Slice of bread to pick up tiny broken glass slivers off the floor.
  9. Toss a dry bath towel in with your wet load in the dryer to reduce drying time and energy!

My favorite tips:

Use your blow dryer on your bathroom mirror when it fogs up; the heat will help clear it.

When baking a chocolate cake from a mix and you need to grease and flour a pan; use some of the cake mix instead of flour and you won't have white flour on your chocolate cake.

For fresh laundry, use white vinegar in your rinse cycle. This was especially helpful for the "stinky towel" issue.

For underarm odor, use a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol to clean the underarm area, let dry, then apply deodorant. I have suffered with underarm odor since adolescence and I have finally found a cure!

The tip I really liked was someone carefully sewed two twin electric blankets together to make one large one, which gave her two controls (one for each side). Ended up costing less than trying to buy one big one, too. I love this site, and read it everyday. There's just too many great tips to list them all, but the above one really stuck in mind, and I'm going to use it! (02/10/2007)

I use powdered sugar (confectioner's sugar) instead of flour when greasing any pan when baking cakes, desserts. It solves the problem by being absorbed into "whatever" while baking. There are no white markings on the finished baked goodies.

I forgot the one I use all the time! I used a knee-hi nylon over my washing machine hose to catch all the lint! One over-flowing washtub, and you are desperate for a cure! (03/09/2007)

I'm always making copies, so I liked learning this one: Highlight only the parts you want copied, then when you go to print press "selection". This saves me a lot of paper. (03/09/2007)
