Cleaning Hair Rollers?

December 15, 2005

Colorful hair rollersI use those velcro hair rollers, but after some usage, loose hair becomes stuck to the rollers and then they don't work very well. Does anybody have an easy way of taking the hair off the rollers? Picking it off by hand is very time consuming!

Thanks for any tips.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I have tried all. The toothbrush wasn't stiff enough and other brushes were too big . The velcro strip worked not too bad. Soaking them in bleach also worked not too bad. The crochet hook helped to lift the hair off the roller too, so it was easier to grab than just using mythumb and fingers.
So, thanks again for all your help, this is the greatest site!

Just rub the rollers against each other.

The Fuller Brush company makes a small rake-like tool to lift hair from hair brushes. You put the small tines under hair on a brush. It works very well. You might have to do some research on-line to find a distributor (they used to sell door to door in the "olden days"!)

I put mine in the washer with a couple of bath towels. Am a hairstylist and have done this for years. Run through low heat dryer with towels, also.

I found a fast and easy way to clean velcro rollers. Take a sanitizing wipe, like Botanicals lemongrass, or somesuch, and wipe down the bristles on the vacuum brush. Wait a few minutes, according to package directions, if needed. Turn on the vacuum and position the roller over the opening in the center of the brush, rolling the hair roller against the bristles on the vacuum brush. Make sure you are very careful with small rollers, as they might upend and get sucked into the vacuum.

The suction force will help to remove and point out hairs that you can use your fingers to loosen if needed. It really doesn't take very long, and it will suction a whole bunch of them at once so that really speeds up the process. Plus there's no cleanup of hairs all over when you are done :)

My curlers are full of hair. The bristles hang onto the hair. I heard there was a way to remove the hair in the washing machine.

There are several different types of 'curlers' so we may not answer correctly for your curler type.

This problem usually happens more often when curlers are used with long hair. It is a constant chore to keep the hairs removed after each use but that is when it is the easiest job.

When loaded with hair you will have to cut the hair either with small scissors or small knife and cut in at least 2-3 places down the curler. It is best to just pull the hairs off the curlers and place in trash as even putting curlers in water only makes hair cling to the curler.
You can 'wash' the curlers in a bowl/pan using a small amount of dish soap and then rinse several times.
I would suggest pouring the dirty water outside or perhaps in the commode if outside is not possible. If you have to pour down sink drain make very sure you have the drain that has a 'trap' to catch anything other than liquid.

You are most likely have velcro rollers (it is really difficult to remove hair from them). I doubt they can be cleaned in a washing machine with towels, maybe just a little. You will have to manually pull the hairs out, but first mix 1/3 ounce gentle shampoos in two cups of warm water and soak rollers for 15 minutes.

Then put on gloves and use a fine tooth, rat-tail comb held at a low angle stroke outward - longitudinally - to the end, stripping off the hairs. If the hairs are very tangled, then cut them. Then soak the cleaned rollers in fresh water, swirl them around. Then rinse under running water and dry.
