Blondie (The Wonder Dog)

Because Blondie is a "shelter-baby" we do not have a definite age; however, the vet thought she was between 5-7 years old when she became a member of our family. Based on that information she is approximately 15+ years. Our dearest Blondie is a mix and (when not shaved) looks like she is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Corgi.

Ten years ago, we began our search for a family pet. We had overlooked Blondie at the animal shelter the first go through. After several non-productive bonding moments with a plethora of other fur-babies, I decided to take just one more tour of the back and there she was. How could we have missed her?

Blondie has always been a lap dog, even at 30 lbs. She never played catch, ran, or really even acted like a dog. Now that our children are all away at college, Blondie has become our constant companion. She seems to love to travel with us, fish with us, camp with us, and sometimes even shop with us.

We thought we were going to lose our dear friend this past year. Late July 4th, as (it seemed) every single neighbor we have was shooting off cannon-ball fireworks all around our house and Blondie suffered a stroke. She began walking in circles and falling as she walked. No vet office was answering their phone that weekend, so we had to wait until Monday to get her to the office. The prognosis was very disheartening. For the next two months we diligently worked to rehabilitate our beloved young lady. One of us stayed home with her at all times.

Because of the heat and her inability to get around while she was in recovery, we took her to the groomer (which made it easier for hygiene). The posted photo was taken when we were picking her up from that "hair appointment".

We are very happy to report that a few weeks ago, the vet had an opportunity to see Ms. Blondie and was ever-so-surprised at her seemingly 100% recovery. She now plays chase with us and is acting more like a pup than a senior. Blondie seems to have found a new attitude these past several months, a new youth, something rare.

Your baby is precious!! Thank you for taking such good care of her! She is just beautiful. My pups are terrified of fire works also. I just dread July 4th and New Year's Eve. We never make any plans for those nights and stay home with our television turned up very loud to drown out the sounds, or try to minimize the impact, at least. We also get a product called Rescue Remedy at our local health food store (you can also buy it online).

The product is for people but you can also use it on your dog. They also make a special dog version. Just put it in your pet's water the day before and the day of and it helps them calm down. If people only knew what fireworks did to animals.

Oh what a sweet face! I do the same thing as Rchinaberr and turn the TV up really loud to help drown out the outside noise. I am so very glad you're Blondie recuperated!

You can see the love and adoration in Blondie's eyes for the person taking that photo, so I assume it was either you or your husband. She loves you just as much as you love her, and she would do for you the same as you did for her if only she could.

The people who benefit from the love of a pet are the richest people in the world, I think. You did well to care for her as you did when she needed you. You saved her life, and now, she's giving back to you all that she has in her to give. Lucky you.

Thank you for sharing her with us. She is precious.
