Tobacco Stains on Wooden Shades?

I just purchased a home and the previous owner was a heavy smoker. The window coverings are nice wood shades but they are stained with tobacco. How do I get this off without ruining the shades? Please help.

Whether you take them outside and wash them with soapy water and a hose or wash them in a bathtub full of soapy water, you will still have to clean them slat by slat. The easiest and least messy way is to take them down one at a time, sit at a kitchen table with a bucket of hot water and Murphy's Oil Soap and go for it.
