Remedy for Hysterectomy Induced Sweats and Weight Gain?

I'm 46 and had a total hysterectomy 10 years ago. I understand about the sweats 24/7, but I have had enough. Premarin doesn't work, compounding pharmacy products don't work. Does anyone have any good suggestions before I lose my mind? Something has to work. Please help me.

Now I'm gaining weight, not a little either. I look like I swallowed a basketball and I don't eat much.

I have not had a hysterectomy but when I was going through early menopause I found Black Cohosh (squaw root) was really effective and had no side effects at all.
I think it is from America originally and was used down the centuries by native Americans, hopefully it will be easy for you to find!

I used Black Cohosh too, with excellent results. I highly recommend it for hot flashes.

I had a partial hysterectomy when I was 35. I learned to stay away from chocolate, nicotine ( I smoked at the time) and caffeine. This will give you hot flashes like no other. I didn't have a problem with weight when I had my surgery.

I started walking 2 miles a day about a month after my surgery. That was 10 years ago. I did gain a lot of weight when I quit smoking, but not when I had my surgery. Hope this helps.

I had a hysterectomy about 10 years ago also. The hot flashes were a lot at first but have now decreased. I still have some but I try to stay as cool as possible. AT night I wear a gown with spaghetti straps and during the day I wear light clothes, no long sleeves on anything. As far as gaining weight you need to have the doctor check your thyroid. It may be low like mine was and I gained weight lots of weight. I now take medicine for it.

Have your thyroid function tested this can be the cause of your problems.

If you have high blood pressure, don't use this product. It causes your blood pressure to skyrocket. I wish that I had researched this stuff before taking it!! I was on Premarin for 17 years. My surgeon told me to stop taking it and to try Black Cohosh.

I did. It helped with the sweats, but caused my blood pressure to go higher than it had ever been. I stopped taking it by my doctor's orders. DO NOT use it if you have HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE!

I used Black Cohosh Root too. I call it the "real chill pill". :-) It said take it 3 times a day, however, since my hot flashes weren't bad, I only took it when I was having the one and it helped "cool" me down right away.

I 2nd the suggestion for the thyroid functions. I had about 2 weeks of mild hot flashes when going through menopause, did not use anything except we kept tabs on the TSH (thyroid) and kept that adjusted very tightly. Every so many months TSH and FHS (hormone level telling you it is meno pause) were done. If your TSH, etc is in order, you pass through without issues. The body is telling you something is out of whack with symptoms. We don't have to have 'replacement' therapy, if we watch what levels our body has for 'natural'.

Hope this helps.
I am a firm believer in keeping the Vitamin D up high, Cs, and Calcium as well. My blood levels of D & Calcium are done quarterly. My weekly dose of D is 85,000 units to keep the level of 60. Levels range 32 to 100. With 5000 units per day I was at 34. A script is needed for the mega doses to maintain the levels.

Had a friend that made it through this period by using yam cream. Stay away from caffeine. Drink plenty of water. Stay as stress free as possible. Yoga may help. Also cooling showers are wonderful.

One of my friends suggested soy milk (other soy such as edamame and tofu help too). It helped me and I have heard that it has helped others as well. Get the kind with the least amount of added sugar and such. I drink about a cup a day for it to help. Others say two cups. Spread it out over the day.

I use Vivelle Dot Patches, transdermal hormone replacement therapy b/c I couldn't take anything oral. I did the compounding pharmacy too; no luck.

These are prescription and are really easy to use. peel off the backing and stick them on your skin where your ovaries used to be. next time you change them, you put them on the other side of your body where your ovaries used to be. You and your doc will work out how many you need per week, etc.

A word on herbs-
Please, please remember that herbs are medicine. They are powerful and have side effects, etc. My chinese doc made this clear as crystal to be when he found out that i was 'medicating' myself with herbs.

I'd check out a real Asian doctor; not a western person who studied in China; who was taught by an Asian person; but a real Asian acupuncturist.
The mind set between someone raised in the east is completely different that one raised in the west. I made that mistake also by going to an American doc who trained in China. I was so messed up physically for so long it wasn't funny.

your insurance company may pay for one, my plan does.

Weight gain. what can i tell you that hasn't already been written here. check out The Rice Diet; it's really old but it works. Too much to go into here, I'm sorry, but that's the name of the book.

going to the endocrinologist is an excellent suggestion; I found out I had thyroid disease while they were trying to figure out the hormone meds.

God Bless you dear one. I know how miserable I was. I had my surgery, they took everything, in 2001 and I still get hot flashes. But the patches work the best for me; i get less flashes as time goes on.

Wear only natural fibre clothing; silk, cotton. I keep a tiny travel size deodorant with me all the time. Always have a clip for my hair, and wear men's t shirts that have a scoop neck and no sleeves. be comfortable. Travel with scented baby wipes. a small bottle or sample of perfume.

Watch the soy products if you're taking them. I'm a vegetarian and found my thyroid symptoms got worse when i had a steady diet of it.

Oh I so feel for you! I stopped taking premarin last January and I'm having exactly the same problems as you are. i don't know if i could take 10 years of this! I've tried black cohosh, soya stuff and soya pills and nothing works so far. I'm going to try sage next to see if that will help. I would really love to know if you find something that works. I can't take this much longer either. I haven't had a good nights sleep since my doctor took me off the premarin and I'm seriously considering going back to them. I'm sure if I look around, I will find a doctor who will prescribe them for me. Yes, they aren't the best thing in the world to take but my quality of life is so bad right now, what's the point of trying to prevent disease if I'm so miserable living the life I have now?

Try magnesium supplementation, too.

I had a "complete Hysterectomy" at age 39 and that was 35 years ago. I took Premarin 1.25 from the day after surgery until three years ago in 2007 when I was hospitalized with Pneumonia. I had a litre of fluid removed from my left lung and had developed a small blood clot in my right lung. I was immediately taken off the Premarin and have suffered continuously since with the "head sweats" = trust me they are not the normal "hot flashes". I have tried nearly everything including Estroven Extra Strength. Nothing seems to work and I am seriously considering asking my (now) doctor if he will prescribe Premarin for me again. The head sweats come with absolutely no warning and are extremely embarassing. I carry headbands with me at all times - not too attractive. Maybe I shouldn't care but I'm only 2 months from being 74 and I do care.

If you are having hot flashes during the night put a fan on your side of the bed and tell your spouse to cover up!
