Expand Your Vocabulary With Dictionary Sites

In newsletter I just read, a reader told about her word of the day project for her kids. It is an excellent idea, wish I had done it. But, why stop with the kids, I have for several years gotten newsletters from two sites that provide a word-of-the-day, with pronunciation, definition and example of its use.

These sites are Dictionary.com and Merriam-Webster.com

A few words I know, most I don't. I may never use them in conversation, but it is still good to know about them. Interesting or odd ones I pass on to family and friends. Some shorter ones I write down for possible use in scrabble type games. Adults can learn new words too, and it is fun. They are the first things I look for in my emails each day.

Here is the link to a vocabulary site that helps feed the hungry as you play for free! www.freerice.com/ It is a great idea to learn about new words but this site makes you feel good for helping the planet as well!

I absolutely love the freerice site and as an English teacher, find it very useful to pass on to my advanced students. They just love it as well and the idea of helping the world's hungry is an added bonus!

Thank you so much and just signed up for both! I love words and trying to figure out their meaning by breaking them down :-) Sometimes am successful and sometimes not ;-)

Okay, I was about to recommend freerice.com too. Instead, I'll expand on it. Since I don't hang out with an intellectual set to use my expanded vocabulary, I started checking around the site. That's when I discovered the other categories freerice.com now offers. I don't know them all, but there's English grammar, math (multiplication and algebra,) chemistry and geography.

Since I can't see the map to pick out the countries, I go to the World Capitals page. I use this as "busy work" While I'm backing up my files at the end of each workday. Keeps me occupied after I've hit my "click-to-give" sites (The Breast Cancer Site, The Hunger Site, The Literacy Site, etc.) Now when the news talks about Indonesia, I know Jacarta is its capital. And I helped feed the hungry while learning it. :D

Hi JustPlainJo,
There is an additional "click to give" site I am posting. It is great to be able to help out when you don't have money to give to a charity; anyone else reading these tips might want to check out the 2 sites, it just takes a minute or 2 a day and it helps tremendously.

I also have a petition on the Care2 website to make people aware of a serious problem on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota. The Lakota people need clothing and food to help them through the winter, many elders freeze to death every year on the res.

Please check out my petition and sign it if you will and help by sending your used clothing or anything else that will help the people survive this winter!

Thank you all and many blessings!
