Saving Money on Plastic Wrap

Tips for saving money on plastic wrap as suggested by the ThriftyFun community.

Cut In Half

One way to save money on plastic wrap is to cut a roll in half. Then you have two narrow rolls that work great for small items like brownies and cookies.

Clean and Reuse

Don't throw away plastic wrap after you are done using it. Instead, wash it and dry it and use it again. Saves money on expensive plastic wrap!

Don't Use Plastic Wrap

Don't use plastic wrap at all. Buy 10 shower caps for a dollar at the dollar store. They stretch as easily over a 9x13 inch cake pan as well as large salad bowls. I wash and reuse too I also like reusable plastic containers. They are the best for leftovers.

Cereal Box Liner

I have had the same box of Plastic wrap for about 3 years. I use the bags inside cereal boxes to store and refrigerate. Will I ever use that plastic wrap? Certainly not for food wrapping.

Our local dollar store (Dollar Castle) has a package of reusable bowl covers for just a dollar. It contains two each of several sizes. Great for those plates and bowls that are too small to use shower caps on.

I buy the food service sized rolls at Sysco and it lasts me for many years. It saves me money because I don't have to buy a roll every few weeks.

I've been trying to fix meals that are just the right amount for our family of 4 and then either no leftovers to pack up or very little. I prefer to pack leftovers in a pyrex or corning dish with lid and then it's ready to be re-heated.

I had the package of plastic bowl covers in different sizes but it just seemed hard to keep up with them and so many of them were tiny sized and I found I needed more of the bigger ones. I didn't really like having to spend time washing them either.

I just think putting leftovers in a microwave safe dish that has a glass lid is easier and only one item to wash, it can keep being resused so nothing to put in the trash either.

My plastic wrap usually lasts a long time.

Because of the cancer causing concerns I have switched to glass containers with lids. It's reusable and you don't have plastic touching your food.

I also try not to use plastic wrap. To reheat in microwave, just put smaller amounts in bowls with a small plate over, for larger, use larger bowl and dinner plate. I often put a second plate under the bowl for safer removal; don't want to drop when hot.

I see the bags inside cereal boxes are popular! I save them and use them when pounding chicken for chicken cutlets or chicken Picata. The bags are really sturdy and never tear.
