Measuring for New Windows?

My daughter wants to fix up her house before she sells it. She wants to do some of the work herself. She needs new windows but does not know how to measure for them.

Well your daughter could have the company that will supply the windows come out and measure them. If she is going to replace the entire window she will have to take off the casing which is the molding and measure the rough opening. That is the distance between the jack studs or the horizontal distance between the two by fours on either side of the opening and the vertical height to the header. Then she should consider removing some of the siding on the outside of the building, installing the new windows so they plumb or not tilted in the opening, sealing the window on the outside where the window meets the siding so the windows do not leak when it rains and reinstalling the outside siding and the inside trim or moldings.I think it would be best if she found a handy man carpenter to do a few of the windows so she could see how it is done and then she could do the rest.

A big problem in selling a house is if the owner did some of the big jobs himself and did a lousy job.

Be sure she replaces her windows with windows that fit the style of the house. Here in NE PA, too many people have tried to update their houses with replacement windows that are inappropriate. The used modern windows in old houses. The result is a devaluation of their property. The company that replaces the windows will know what I am talking about if you are unsure.

Most all contractors or window replacement stores will give free estimates. They could come out to her home and measure for her.
