Disposing of Old Batteries?

Why do alkaline batteries have to go in the trash? Can't they go to a recycling center or at least a battery place?

In my area there are several places to recycle batteries. office stores (office depot & office max), electronics stores (best buy, circuit city), and our coop are all places that recycle them. check with those types of stores in your area. Ink cartridges can also be recycled at most office stores. Cell phones at electronics stores. Best of wishes. Hope that helps. Rose

Our town' public library and fire houses all accept batteries for recycling. We are told not to put them in the trash.

Thank you both for your replies! I will look into the places you mentioned. I really didn't want to put them in the trash.

Our county has a hazardous materials collection twice a year, once in the Spring and once in the Fall. They accept akaline batteries. I take a washed out milk jug and cut a hole in the top of the jug large enough for the largest batteries we use. The jug sits in an area where we collect our (home) recyclables, so when we need to dispose of a battery that is where it goes, along with the button type batteries too. Each Spring and Fall we take jug and all to the haz mat collection.

Because alkaline batteries corrode and have acid, they should never be discarded in the trash. If you take them to any Best Buy and see personnel there, they will accept them and dispose of them for you at no extra charge to you. Good luck.

Lowe's also has a battery recycle center that accepts all forms of batteries.

In our town the public library will accept batteries. Same goes for the police station and the firehouse. Call your town and ask, or check their website online.

I am trying to find where I can turn in our house batteries. We are told not to put in the garbage, but our landfill/recycling location does not take them.

Here's info from the city of Tampa website:

Batteries: Button and nickel cadmium batteries from cell phones etc should be taken to a participating store such as Radio Shack, Target, Home Depot etc., or to a Household Chemical Collection event.

You could call one of the stores to make sure they actually take them.

Best Buy stores have bins right inside the front door for batteries and other recyclable items.

In our town, we have two large item or hazardous item pickups per year from the garbage company. That is when they encourage the throw away of batteries.

Go to earth911.com and type in - single use batteries and your zip code. It should give you facilities close to you to dispose of them.
Good luck, grtdnm
