Boycott Gas On May 15th

Hi, I was reading the gasoline tips and thought I would pass this along. Did you know if just 7 million people did not buy gas on one selected day, it would cost the oil companies $20 billion dollars on the average, based on the cost of filling up your tank at $30.00. Please read the following

I am an avid blogger. I have been receiving tons of email from fellow blogers and regular email. It seems they are trying to organize a boycott across the United States on gasoline.

The date I have received is May 15th 2007. They are asking everyone to not buy gas on that day. My sister is a truck driver and she emailed me that the truckers are going to participate.

If this goes well they want to pick one day each month and a specific gasoline company and boycott it on that day. Those that are participating are hoping to force the oil companies to lower the cost of gas and to push the focus on alternative green fuel.

I, for one am behind this 100%. We as a nation can make a difference and be heard. This our planet and our environment.

Editor's Note: In short, a one day boycott of buying gas won't lower gas prices, cutting down on how much gas you USE, could have an impact. If everyone picked one day a week where they didn't drive either by replacing your normal trips with public transportation, carpooling, biking or walking, it would have a much bigger impact.

I would really appreciate if the editors would not put this kind of scam/spam on our newsletters. Anyone can look on Snopes and see the truth. I get enough of this stuff from my mom and MIL "Just in case it works"
Please refrain from allowing these posts in the future.

Editor's Note: You'll notice we did put a note at the bottom. When we hear about the boycotts on CNN and other shows, we figure it's worth posting.

This sounds like a good idea, but it simply will not work....Why? "Cause the majority of the people who DO NOT buy gas on May 15 will just buy it either the day before or the day after and the oil companies will still make a killing off of us....Best thing to do at gas stations is NOT to buy anything but the gas...this means, no pop, snack foods, candy, cigarettes whatever.....Not saying this will work, but worth a try.....

Great idea! however, those companies dont care! You will just buy gas the day before or the day after. They dont lose.

I've been told that if we boycott Exxon/Mobil, the largest oil company it would make a much larger impact. By boycotting them for weeks or months it would surely cause them financial problems and it would not inconvenience the average driver.

Think about it. They would need to lower their prices and, of course, the smaller companies would follow suit.

I can give you one better than that. For the last year I have not driven my car. I either walked or used public transportation. My refusal to buy into the "I have to have it now" attitude made me feel good, and powerful. I suggest if you can find another way to do what you need to, either public transportation, walking, riding a bicycle, or even carpooling will make a difference. If enought people do this it's going to make the oil people sit up and take notice. Then who will get the last laugh? You and I friend

Nutty idea. A boycott only works if you are going to stop using gas completely. It would be nice if bloggers learned the economics of business then they might stop these foolish blogs.

A gas boycott will have a very short effect. A better idea would be an "employer boycott": calling in sick for a few consecutive days will motivate employers to call their political "friends" and demand action, maybe.

I probably won't buy gas on the 15th but I don't know how much good it will do. The snopes article is very interesting and makes some good points about "gas-out's" hurting the little guys and having no discernible effect on the major gas suppliers. What I am going to do is sell our second car and limit our family driving. I no longer have to drive to work and my husband can ride his bike. This should reduce our gas consumption by a lot.

Oil companies have a very sweet deal. All of the oil companies have been paying NO royalties for the gas and oil that they pump out of ground in the United States. As long as oil is over $50 a barrel, they pay no royalties which is many billions of dollars lost to the general fund. Write your senators and congresspersons about this and demand that this windfall for the oil companies be reversed. You'll notice that the price per barrel has remained above $50 per barrel ever since they passed this law.

So, they get royalty free oil from us and we're paying record prices at the pumps.

As Fran from Rogue River, OR mentioned, it would be much more "hurtful" to Oil companies to pick a company to boycot instead of a day to not buy gas. You could boycot one gas company each month, changing the company each month. Of course one person doing the boycot wouldn't have much effect; however, just think of the impact that having a million or more consumers boycotting a specified gas company every month or so would have!

I will not buy gas on the 15th even though I know most people will buy their gas the day before or the day after.I wish someone who knows would tell us what we can do to reallly make a difference! My husband and I are already cutting back on our trips to the store and such.

Although Snopes says it won't work, I get tired of hearing that if people really do something "it won't work." Seems like there are things we can do. I heard today that you aren't actually getting your full gallon of gas when temperatures are above 60 degrees. For those of you who live in hot places, you will never get your full gallons worth. The gas heats up in the truck when coming from the refinery, then is put in a thermal tank that will keep it warm. In Canada where you would think this would work in your benefit, they do have a temperature sensor on the tanks so you are charged per gallon rather than at the 60 degree rate. Just another way they ding us.

It seems like it might help to buy your gas early in the morning when it should be at it's lowest temperature.

The best thing to do would be to get a majority of people to change their driving habits. Carpool, ride the bus, walk, ride a bike occasionally, etc. Just boycotting gas for a day isn't going to do anything. There will just be a slow day for oil companies, then suddenly record profits.

Gas station owners make very little profit off of gas. They have to pay the same high prices we do. Most of thier profits come from the snacks and cigs ect... If you stop buying their snacks and sodas then they will go out of business and you'll have to waste even more gas driving to another station further away. Until the government puts the oil companys in check nobody will win at this game.

From Enairo.com.....
There is only one way to bring gas prices down. A one day, or even one week gas out will never work! We must all ban together, tell everyone we know, and stick to a simple plan.

Each month we choose a gas company, and ban that company for a whole month. (unless they stay at the top of the stock market) Take a moment of your time, visit the finance site of your choice, and don't buy gas from the company with the highest stock.

To make it simple, we will start the months of May, and June of 07, and ban Exxon Mobil (XOM). On the 1st day of July, whoever is on top of the stockmarket, they win that month's gas ban!

Simple, Huh?! So, tell everyone you know that from now until June 30th to not purchase ANY gas from Exxon Mobil stations! If they still remain on top on July 1st, the ban continues for them, if not we move on to the next Top Dog!

You'll see, VERY SOON (probably before July) that the gas prices will begin to drop! Together we WILL make a difference! Email, call, fax, or yell from your car!!! Make sure everyone you know has heard our plan. If we follow the plan, we'll soon be back to the good 'ol days of 99 cents a gallon!

We may all HAVE to get gas, but we can CHOOSE WHERE we buy it!!!
