What Does "Aran" Crochet Mean?

What is meant by "Aran" in crochet patterns, etc.? I can't seem to understand its meaning. In fact, it seems it is a kind of a yarn and/or stitch? pattern? Please un-confuse me and thanks.

An Aran pattern refers to what the typical Irish fisherman's sweater looks like, a solid color (usually ivory) with many textured stitches. Google for photos.
