I read a lot and travel a lot. I find most of my reading material at junk sales for $.25 and $.50. That's a great deal when paper backs now run around $8.00. The biggest bargain I've found is on audio books for my long road trips. You can sometimes pick up $25.00 or $30.00 audios for a dollar or less.

FYI: I just Googled your public library, and just like mine here in Minnesota you can check out audio-books (cassettes) and audio-cds at your local library for 21 days and renew it (online, in person, or probably also by phone) once more for 21days. This means you can check them out for up to 6 weeks -- which is plenty of time for most road trips, or even if you only listen in the car to and from work. They also have a much larger selection than you'll ever find at a garage sale and probably you can use the electronic card catalog to request audio-titles from other libraries throughout the Tennessee system.
If you don't want to go to the library at all, I notice your library also has e books which means they have the license rights to let you download recorded books for free to listen to on your computer, MP3, or Ipod. This option is great if you can't easily get to the library during their regular hours because you can access it 24 hours a day. Also, you will never get fined because e books aren't physical books and so don't have to be returned. If you don't know how to download audio files, I'm sire the librarians would be delighted to walk you through it the first time if you just ask.
Libraries also usually have a somewhat dated but decent selection of DVDs (and some still have videotapes) you can also check out -- although these you usually have to return in only a few days or maybe a week.
The upshot is, if you haven't checked out your local library in a while, you are missing out on a great resource and free (except for fines) means it's one of the thriftiest bargains out there!
[Oops! I just looked at the library page again and notice that it is in Maryville - which appears to be about 20 miles away from Tallassee. If you don't get there much, I still suggest getting a cheap 10-20 dollar mp3 player and start downloading free e books through the library online.] Good Luck and happy listening.
