How old should a Shih Tzu be before having a baby?

You should at least skip the first heat which happens at about 6 months. Breeding on the first heat would be like your 15 year old having a baby...not ready to care for a baby. The 3rd or 4th heat is really best.

Unless you have a show winning shitzu, which you don't or you would know the answer to your question your dog will never be "old enough". There are already too many puppies in the world and way too many animals in need of homes.

Leave to the homes for those in need. Don't create more need!

Don't breed your dog. There are too many unwanted puppies and dogs in this world. Just log in to Petfinder and see the thousands of dogs who need homes. Please don't add more dogs to this world.

I have to agree with the with the previous contributors. Dogs are being put to death because there are not enough homes. Sure you could find homes for your puppies, but that means less opportunity for dogs already needing homes. If you're not convinced watch the show Oprah did on conditions in shelters.

You'll see the most adorable young dog ,under a year old, being euthanized. I was heart sick for days after. The dogs that are already born need all the help they can get. Please, please don't add to the problem.

Others have already said it but I will too. If you aren't a professional breeder please don't start. Every one thinks their dog has great qualities but those great puppies usually end up at the dog pound and then not having a home but being put down.

I agree with most of the previous posters...do NOT breed your dog. There are way too many unwanted puppies and kittens (as well as adult dogs and cats) in this world that suffer needlessly.

Please don't, there are many other and safer ways to make money. While they are so cute, you REALLY have to be a well trained, knowledgeable and skilled breeder to breed any animal, we already have enough of those (and 100 bad ones for every good one!)

Like the other posters before me, I am also against this because of the reasons previously mentioned. But if you are still considering breeding, I urge you to read this article first: network.bestfriends.org/.../postdetail.aspx?np=29484

There are currently 1,117 Shitzu dogs listed on Petfinder.com. Yes, some are mixed, some are Puppy Mill rescues but MANY are purebreds bred by well intentioned persons like yourself. Even expensive puppies from the very best breeders end up homeless.

It happens every day because you can't control what a buyer or their family does after the cute puppy is sold and does something the owner doesn't think is so cute. Please take a reality check.
