How to Chop an Onion

  1. Trim off the flat top end of the onion, that is opposite the root end.
  2. Chopping the end off an onion

  3. Set the onion down on the cut side so it won't roll around. Cut the onion in half lengthwise, through the root end.
  4.
  5. Peel the outer yellow/brown skin from the onion.
  6.
  7. Slice through the onion from the root to the cut end, keeping the root end intact. This will hold the onion together and make the rest of the chopping easier. Make the slices thinner for a dice.
  8.

The onion will look like this now. We spread the onion out a little more then it normally would be so you can see the slices.

  9. Make a couple of horizontal cuts from the cut end towards the root end.
  10.
  11. Chop the onion from the cut end to the root end. Again, cut thinner slices for a dice.
  12.
  13. Toss the last bit of the root end in the compost or save it for making soup stock later.
  14.

I don't like onions and I'm allergic to them, but if I absolutely have to chop them, I put them in a blender.

I leave them out of recipes and the dishes turn out just as well without them.

We onion lovers would disagree with you! We love onions not only for its flavor and aroma, but also its slight crunch. I find the addition of onions to enhance any savory dish.

As for the blender, it can't really chop onions. The small blade and cylindrical container makes it suitable only for chopping very small amounts of small items, e.g. herbs. There simply isn't enough space for the chopped onions to go so it'll constantly fall back into the blade sure to gravity. As a result, you'll likely end up with a puree if you tried chopping an onion. That's why food processors exists.
