Old car tyres placed over new trees or shrubs will deter rabbits and possums until plant is mature. The tyres also hold rain-water in the rim which creates a humidified environment for the plant. When watering, also fill the rim. I have used this for some time and found that the plants with tyres flourished more quickly than ones without.

They can also be used as planters, for the eco-minded individuals out there, do not worry, tires only release toxins if burned.
Tires are also a component in the building of earthships (very eco-friendly houses).
Great idea! (I have read not to plant veggies and other edibles in tires as tires can leach nasties into your food. If you do think about planting edibles in tires, do a little research first.)
I have used tires also, but soon discovered snakes like the warmth of the tires. This took the fun out of gardening.
Beware of leaving standing water in the tires. These can be a breeding ground for mosquitos that may carry the West Nile Virus! If you do want to have open containers with standing water left in them, then use larvacide tablets (also called dunks) in them, these are avilable at home and garden centers.
