Can You Play Harmonica With Dentures?

Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 213 Posts

I'm an avid harmonica player but I may be required to get dentures. I'm worried that having dentures may impede my harmonica playing.

Do any of you have any experience playing harmonica with dentures? If so, do the dentures diminish your skills in any way?

Yes. My dad had partial dentures and he was an excellent harmonica player! I miss him.

Last year the director of our senior citizen group arranged the entertainment for our annual Christmas party. There were about 6-8 senior men who played their harmonicas, and I know that most of the men wore dentures.

And they did a fantastic job.

My husband has been playing a harmonica for about 60 years. For the past 10 years, he has had full dentures. He uses a denture adhesive prior to playing, and plays beautifully. For most of those years, he just played alone for his own enjoyment, but for the past 2 years, hehas been playing for gospel singing events locally along with friends who play guitars, and I have even started playing a drum with the little group. We all have lots of fun. And we also play at some of the senior living centers locally.

Yes. I do and have for years. Use a denture adhesive and all is good. It took me less than a few days to get right back up to playing speed when I got my full set.

Really, I have to say it didn't make much difference at all.

My dad played the harmonica for years while wearing dentures. He played beautifully. He didn't even use adhesive. I wish I could hear him play again.

I am a young player with dentures from an accident. I rinse my mouth before I play to keep coffee and soda out of my harps but as soon as they settle....I have no issues....I would use adhesive for my own peace of mind if playing at Church or for a crowd but I think that is more mental protection than physical need.

Good luck!
