To water outside plants while on vacation, simply bury a piece of yarn beside of plant and run the other end of yarn into a bucket of water. Presto! The plants will absorb water as needed. Happy gardening!

Does it matter if the yarn is cotton (which is more absorbent) or will regular worsted ACRYLIC yarn do?

Ive used cheap yarn& I cut 7 strands the same length and twisted them together,to make this very thin yard thicker so it will absorb more water and tying a knot on each end to keep them tightly wound.make sure you soak the yarn first& if your useing this system to water your out door planted plants then push one end of the yarn wick into the soil close to its roots and Dont! Pack the soil down too tight! I have my outdoor self watering system to my plants all year round because the soil in our side back yard is very dandy& the weather here in So Cal. Gets very hot!
I haven't ever tried it myself but have heard from several different sources that it worked.I have used yarn to start plants because it stayed moist for days after moistening.
I made a self watering system for my planted outdoor plants & it works well.My mom use to do this with her indoor plants every so many years when she was going home to Scotland.She taught me this trick back in the 70s .
