Selecting the Perfect Comforter?

I need your recommendations for a comforter to cover my whole king-size bed during the day and night. Both outer fabric and inner fill, please.

My situation:

  1. I'd prefer a size covering down through the boxsprings, since I use it each morning to cover everything on the bed.
  2. I use no topsheet at all, so the comforter is against my skin. Nor do I use a blanket. Yeah, European ideas!
  3. My 63-lb dog sleeps on the bed most nights, so I need to run the comforter through the wash on "cool" pretty often.
  4. My indoor cats traipse across it routinely, though they rarely scratch at it.
  5. Personally, I'd really prefer one w/pin-tucks for its looks, but that's not necessary.
  6. Cause of all these issues, the stitching must be super good.
  7. I do have allergies to just about all environmental stuff, but they'll never really improved (long story).
  8. I would like to keep the price under $150, the closer to $100 the better. For a really superior product that meets all the above, I'd consider more.

I really appreciate all your recommendations. Thanks so much! The one I'm using ever since I bought the bed last year is way too short, barely overlapping the top. Also, whether from washings and/or from my dog, it has minor dings throughout, where it's loosing its innards.

Hi, Nica. You're going to have to take measurements of the depth of your mattress & box spring. Different mattresses have different depths (I don't know if box springs have a standard depth, or if they also vary). So if #1 is very important to you (covering the box springs), you have to get measurements.

Have you considered a bedskirt to cover the boxsprings? That might help your situation.

Thanks, mrs, good advice! I didn't know that "king size" offers different sizes.

But as for the bedskirt, probably not my style. I favor very clean (can be elegant) lines, little frill, & non-dust collectors. As you might imagine, w/ hardwood floors & 7 four-footers scurrying on them all, the dust bunnies keep proliferating!

You're asking for an awful lot. LOL! Take Mrs.Story's advice about measuring and you might want to also consider get the correct size duvet cover for it. Keep the duvet on it for easy pet hair removal and to help keep the comforter in good shape longer.

Simply take off the duvet if you're going to have company you want to show your nice comforter off to. ;-)

I would say good luck in getting a king-size comforter as large as you want. I wish I had a larger one also. You will definitely need to take measurements, and I'm not sure you will find one larger than what you have already. Overstock.com has a good selection at good prices. If you don't want to fool with the duvet, you can always triple-sheet your bed, a bottom sheet, a top sheet and then a sheet to cover and protect your comforter. That's what I'm doing right now as I got tired of fighting the duvet cover, getting it on and off and back on again. I just pin the sheet on top of the comforter at the top and it stays beautifully.

I have lots of ideas, but you don't say you can sew/run a sewing machine, so that lets all those go aside.
I don't use a bedspread but a comforter on the bed. You most likely will have to special order a size. Call and ask JCPennys for starters. Anyway, I have a regular bed, use a queen comforter. Also have a German Shorthair who sleeps on the bed. But for the protection of my comforter, I put a matching sheet over the top of it, she lays on the bottom half of the bed and knows she can't get up on it till told she can.

If you are planning to wash the comforter due to the animals on the bed, you should take it to a commercial laundry and use the triple or quad sized machine. Too small machine will tear it up. Line dry it, don't use the dryer. That makes wear and tear too.My grandma helped me make a big spread/comforter for my bed. 2 queen sheets, same design different colors so I could change up when I wanted to. Lined it with heavy older comforter. Quilt tied it, due to finished edges on the sheets, we did not seam them. Again, cleaning will be an issue for large front loading machines.

The size you are looking for sounds to me like a "bed spread" rather than a "comforter". Bed spreads are more like what hotels typically use. Bed spreads are much thinner than comforters but the larger size will hang down more over the edges of the bed and because they are thinner, they are easier to fit in a washing machine.

I use a bed spread in the summer and in winter I use a comforter to sleep with but then add the bed spread on top when I make the bed. Looks nice and if the cats spend the day sleeping and shedding their fur on it it's much easier to fit in the washing machine!

Thanks, everyone. I know I'm asking a lot! I can sew, but have more experience on smaller items such as clothes. I'll try variations on what you've all suggested. I also might see if there's such a thing in comforters as California King size.
