My husband and I stayed at the Royal Playa del Carmen in Playa Del Carmen (just south of Cancun) and it was really beautiful. The beach was nice, the food was varied and delicious and there were lots of activities included but no one really bugged you.

We were going to stay in Cancun but everything that we read told us that it was getting very touristy so we went for Playa del Carmen instead. We used Trip Advisor a great deal for info. If your heart is set on Cancun, they have a Royal there too.

Be sure, whereever and whenever you go, GET TRIP INSURANCE! We didn't at first and Hurricane Dean was threatening to ruin our vacation and cost us a lot of money. This area is prone to hurricanes and it is nice to have that piece of mind. Feel free to contact me via ThriftyFun or leave another feedback if you have more questions. We were there in August 2007 for 6 days.

We used the Holiday Inn Sunspree in Cancun.
It has three swimming pools with a wet bar in the middle of one of the pools, and a soothing ocean breeze and an ocean front view. There was grilled meat all day long on the beach front and Mayan Ruins were right across the street where iguanas were also kept.

We had a terrific time and buses were easy to get for taking trips to town.

My cousin just wrote and said they loved the Ritz Carlton and the Paradisus Riveria. Hope this helps. Have a good time!

We stayed at the RIU Caribe in 2006. It was the best we could afford and I was worried that it wasn't a 5 star but it turned out to be a very nice place. I would stay there again. I have heard good things about the playa del carmen area but haven't had a chance to stay in that area yet. We did take a tour down there to a park called Xcaret. Well worth it. They have an underground river you can snorkel as well as great snorkeling right off the beach. It was AWESOME.

For our honeymoon almost 5 1/2 years ago we stayed at the El Dorado Resort. It is between Cancun and Playa del Carmen and they have buses that will take you into either town.

Of course, there is a lot of other stuff that they offer too. They are right on the beach and even though we were there at the end of a hurricane it was wonderful!
