Amazing Deals On Outdoor Fabric at Walmart

Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 213 Posts

These days it's sometimes cheaper to buy a garment already made than it is to sew it! This is so sad. Fabric has gone through the roof (like everything else!). I live in an area that has 5 Walmarts that sell fabric within a 40 mile radius of me. So when I'm near one, I make sure to drop in and check out their $1 a yard fabric. Each store sells different fabrics. Some $1 a yard fabrics are cheaply made, and some are name-brand, quality fabrics. You just have to know what you're buying, but you really can't go wrong at a dollar a yard!

Well, last week I found such a great deal: I saw this wonderful outdoor fabric that had some kind of rubberized sealant attached to it in a beautiful dark green. (The sealant is there to keep your cushions from getting wet when it rains.) I bought the rest of the bolt (8 yards) for only $2 a yard and came home and checked the internet. I found out it was worth $25 per yard! And this isn't the first time that's happened to me! You never know what you'll find!

Walmart was going to close down all of their fabric areas last year, but a bunch of us wrote them and told them that's what brings us into their store! So they decided to keep the fabric, but NOT to put fabric into any new stores. So sad, but at least we know that e-mail and letter writing can work miracles! For indoor or outdoor fabrics, Check out Walmart. Even if you have to do a bit of driving, it'll pay for your gas and time!

If you have the time: Send an e-mail to Walmart and tell them how much you enjoy their fabric, so they don't think about closing the fabric area down again!

I used to work at Walmart, across from fabrics and crafts, and I remember the crowds that those $1 fabric sales caused. I got some myself.

The only thing that concerns me is that all or most of that fabric is made in China.

I worry about formaldehyde on the fabric, especially when I would be sewing it. Once it's sewn, it would be ok for outdoor use, I guess.

I, also, have used many of their $1 fabrics. I had heard at one point that they were taking fabric out of Walmarts too. I didn't realize there was such an outrage across the country though. As far as it coming from China, I am sure a lot of the fabrics in regular fabric stores comes from China also.....can't seem to get away from that.

Most ALL fabric has formaldehyde on it (the sizing) when it's new... It doesn't matter if it's from China or made in the USA... That's just the way they make fabric!... (sadly so) I've been sewing for 40 years now & know my fabrics & fabric brands pretty well & MOST of the fabrics I've seen sold for $1 a yard at Walmart are NOT from China (Yes, some are from India)... They come from ALL OVER THE WORLD including the US... The reason they are sold for $1 a yard is that they are fabrics that didn't sell (to the fabric stores or ready-to-wear clothing makers)... Waaay back... Not just from LAST SEASON, but from back 4 or 5 years ago...(or more)... You can tell a lot of the time, because of the colors & older styles of some prints... These fabrics are from (way) past seasons' fabrics that the companies just want to unload & get rid of! ... It's better for them to sell them "By the Pallet Load" to Walmart than to have to pay to take them to a landfill... I buy mostly Black & Navy colors (for me) along with bright children's calico prints (for my granddaughter).. & you can't go wrong with these & they never go out of style....

---> As for the Formaldehyde, That's why a lot of people can't go in to fabric stores... (& new clothing stores as well)... & that's why you should WASH your new clothes & fabrics as soon as you get home...As I said earlier, Formaldehyde isn't JUST in Chinese fabrics, It's in most ALL fabrics.... You'll have more of a chance of having formaldehyde in your clothes if they are "permanent press" because formaldehyde is used for the coating that provides permanent press quality to fabrics. They used to say that the only fabrics that you didn't have to worry about or wash when you got home is ones that say "100% ORGANIC" on the label... Well, that was until they found out that some garment manufacturers in warm, tropical regions like Asia sometimes add formaldehyde to ORGANIC fabrics to prevent mildew in the clothing before it's transported!!

* Formaldehyde is what gives cars & homes that "New" smell... it's in the carpets, paneling & particleboard & glue too... Nasty stuff! ...It can take up to a year for it to dissipate from a new car or home!
* Besides the building and construction industry, formaldehyde can be found in almost every closet and drawer in a conventional home in some form: This is a partial list of things that contain formaldehyde: (also vaccines for kids) personal care products cosmetics, fingernail polishes, antiperspirants, bubble bath, bath oils, shampoos, creams, mouthwashes, deodorants, toothpaste, cleaning products and supplies household cleaners, disinfectants, polishes & paper products formaldehyde resins are used to improve the water resistance, grease resistance, shrink resistance, and wet-strength properties of some paper products such as paper towels, napkins and coated paper products;... Are you sure that they're not putting it in the new stores? I heard that rumor that they weren't doing the fabric department anymore and since then we've got a new Wal-Mart in our area and it has fabric.

Hmmm... THAT'S what I heard... (no fabric in the NEW stores) with the exception of what they call their "community stores"... or something like that.... I could be wrong... I hope so... Either way, WRITE to Walmart & tell them how much you enjoy their fabric area... Tell them that's what brings you into the store in the first place... THEN, maybe they won't think about shutting down all the fabric areas again... (I hear they've already closed down a bunch of fabric areas in some towns!) ... It was the letter writing that saved the day last year when the were going to close down ALL the fabric in ALL the stores... Lets' do what we can to keep $1 a yard fabric! ... Otherwise, it's cheaper to buy R.T.W. than it is to sew!
