"Television as we know it is about to change. By law, television stations nationwide must switch from the old method of transmitting TV signals known as analog to digital television (DTV) on February 17, 2009."

It sure looks like free TV is going to be a thing of the past. I wonder if that's going to affect TV reception for those homes that have an rotary antenna installed on their roof.

We had free digital TV up until I broke down and got the Dish Network so my husband could watch ALL the NBA playoff games. We bought a new widescreen TV and were able to tune into the broadcast channels in digital and HD using rabbit ears. The picture was beautiful and, in our area, there were some extra channels. For example, the local PBS station is broadcasting different 5 channels. I bet the rotary antennas will work perfectly.

It works just like old TV except you have to have the correct type of TV to get the signal or a converter box. Any television purchased after October 1, 2007 (now!) has to have a digital converted already built in. According to that site, there will be coupons to help defray the cost of purchasing the converter box issued to each family before the 2009 cutoff date.

One thing that I have been warned about is buying a television that is marked as a "monitor". Manufacturers are marking them this way so they don't have to have the digital tuner built in. You might see some really good deals out there but make sure it is really a television.
