Looking for Information About Pesto?

What is pesto? Where would you find it in a grocery store? Can it be made at home? I find this in several recipes and it's totally new to me.

Pesto is an italian sauce of usually olive oil and various herbs. You can find it by the spaghetti sauce, usually on the top shelf, next to the tomato pesto. Both are very good on most pastas. We have used this as a side dish and you can add veggies or meat if you want to.

Pesto is a sauce made from grinding basil leaves, olive oil and garlic in a mortar and pestle or food processor. Some recipes call for other spices and pine nuts. Traditionally served on pasta or as a dip.

Very easy to make, or it may be with the pasta sauces at the grocery store. Check www.recipesource.com and search for pesto sauce.

Pesto is part of our staple summer diet, partly because we love it and partly because basil is so easy to grow.
3 oz pine kernals,1/2cup fresh basil, 4-6 cloves garlic, 4oz parmesan-grated, 1/4 pint olive oil, salt/pepper. Blend kernals first, add basil & garlic. Add cheese gradually then slowly bit by bit the oil, still blending.
If we use it as a sauce on pasta, we like to add a tin of tomatoes, blending it into the pesto. A feast on homemade wholemeal pasta!

My pesto sauce uses parsley as well as basil. Combine in a blender 1/4 c. chopped parsley, 1 c. lightly packed fresh basil leaves or 1/4 c. dried, and 1 c. Parmesan cheese; whirl, adding 6 to 8 tbl. oilve oil until a smooth thick paste forms. Add 2 tbl. lemon juice. Makes 1 cup
