Try shrubs that go through season changes and get berries in the fall. We use a varied bird seed routine to get cardinals and other birds to come by. One thing to worry about is the squirrel, as it will eat any bird seed that falls to the ground!
Allison is right for the shrubs & berries. Birds like to "eat in the wild".
Our cardinals love black oil seed. I have a feeder of that, overhung by a block of commerical suet/seed. We get numerous birds for both. Not to forget the mourning doves or black eyed juncos, we also put out a pan of cracked corn. To that, we add whatever our pet bird won't eat! The wild birds eat it all! If nearby protection is available, that is good. We have a couple of lilacs close by.
For birdbaths, you'll find that birds are happy bathing only if they have a lot of foliage close by. We have 3 birdbaths with that feature & they are well used!
We don't have a pool, so can't help you there. The right sized birdhouses with the right sized holes will attract the birds you want - start with a "google"
As a closing note, almost everything I plant in my garden is there to attract bees, butterflies or birds & we get a LOT of all of those!
