NU-EYES for Dogs?

My Princess, a Miniature Pinscher, just turned 10 years old. On Friday night, July 18th, 2008, I noticed she was not seeing things right. I called the Vet and made an appointment for Saturday morning at 8AM. By that next morning she had lost most of her site, 90%, I was totally heartbroken by this. The Vet said she had cataracts and then did some blood work that came back as her being diabetic. He started her on insulin, but where it's the weekend I haven't been able to talk to anyone else at a different Vet's office for more info. My Vet told me surgery was not recommended as the results were very poor with a high chance of glaucoma and then the removal of the eye altogether and that the cost was through the roof.

Has anyone tried NU-EYES for dogs with cataracts? If so I could use all the information anyone is willing to share with me.

Given the glaucoma issue I thought that if anyone out there had any luck with NU-EYES(TM) and there was a chance of it working I would give it a try. Right now I feel so helpless for her. Below is a link to the site that talks about NU-EYES

I have never heard of this product, but what I CAN tell you is that I work at a no-kill animal shelter and have fostered blind dogs and cats....they get along quite well without their eyesight...it takes them a while to adjust...but your dog will be okay...some tips...don't move food or water bowls and be prepared for spills....keep floors clear of obstacles, block all stairs, NEVER take her outside without a leash...not even in your yard, you never know when she may wander off...and always try to make noises so she knows where you are...sing, hum, talk, whatever...the 3 greatest obstacles for blind pets are: not finding their food and water, injuring themselves by tripping over things left lying around or falling down the stairs, and being frightened by the sudden "appearance" of a very quiet person...enjoy her and love her even more...she needs you...

We have had a minature pincher who has been diabetic and on Novilin twice a day for several years. He is 16 years old, mostly blind and deaf. He gets along fine. The Vet told us cataract surgery for dogs is not perfected yet. People are fine usually the next day but dogs recovery is slow and not too successful.

Be sure you take your dog back to a vet if they react to the shots like a person whose sugar is too low- stumbling about like they are not aware of where they are and not aware of you. I was giving our dog a part of a cookie with frosting between but when the blood sugar was checked he was getting too much insulin. The amount he needs can change.

Hi Lois, Thank you for the heads up on things you have experienced with your miniature pincher. What's his or her name? Its always nice to have contact with people that are dealing with the same type of stuff.

Again Lois, Thank you very much for you time and reply. Larry & Princess

Hi Catastrofy, I sure do like where you work, a no-kill animal shelter. You have given me renewed hope for my Princess by telling me how well they do without their eyesight.

Also, thank you very much for all the tips on what to look out for and how to have things placed around the house. Larry
