What Internet Home Page Do You Use?

Gold Post Medal for All Time! 846 Posts

I have used Google as my home page since it launched, but have been quite irritated with it since they came up with 'Google Instant' a few months ago. I 'hate' Instant because it slows my searches way, way down and also Instant does not show my MacAfee alerts of whether a link is okay, not tested yet, warning proceed with caution or outright dangerous to open for deciding if it's okay to click on a link for searches.

Anyway, earlier this week Google decided to not even have an option to turn Instant off in any way shape or form at all so that's the last straw for me! I've made Yahoo my home page for now, but if anyone has a better suggestion I would love to hear about it and give it a try! I did try Firefox a long time ago, but hated it and uninstalled it within a couple of days so please don't suggest Firefox, okay? Sorry to be picky if you're a Firefox lover ;-)

Hi Cajun,

You must not use Google as your home page or you most certainly would know there absolutely is no way to 'uninstall Google Instant'. All you could do, until last week as I mentioned in my question here, was to 'temporarily disable Instant. Now you can't even do that and therein lies my frustration. If you read the links of what you suggested you'll see that they reaffirm the problem I am talking about.

Was just wondering what other TF family members use and like as their home page (other than Google and Firefox) so that I could give them a try. I thank you very much for your effort of looking for a possible solution to Instant and commenting. Since you didn't mention what your home page is I am going to assume its Firefox. LOL. Thanks again for at least trying to find a solution. :-)

Hugs,
Deeli

I use a blank page. I use internet explorer for a browser and every time I want to search the web I have no desire to read all the news and other stuff on all the 'home' pages. Besides that it takes time to load all those graphics. You can set "blank page" by going to tools, options in the internet explorer browser.

I use Yahoo for my e-mail account and my homepage is my Yahoo inbox.

Check out www.refdesk.com and see if you might like that. So much much information an that page. Can even open a lot of e-mail servers right there.

Hi Deeli,
I use MSN for my homepage. It's full of info in case I want to browse through it, and since I use hotmail for email, I can easily just click on the hotmail and go to my log in page. I use bing for my searches and I've never had a problem with it. Macaffee works with it since I used to use it myself.

Deeli,

I have been keeping Instant turned off too, more because I am irritated at only being able to see 10 results at a time if I use it. It has been a pain having to reset Instant every time Google updates.

However, the ability to turn Instant off still exists in the Search settings, which are found under the little gear symbol in the upper right hand corner of the page.

I use www.google.com/ as my homepage in the Firefox browser. I'd debate the pros and cons of browsers but you said you didn't want to do that!

I thank all of you for your feedback! I'll try each of your ideas and see what fits best :-) Contester, I need to mention that I also no longer even had/have the 'Search' setting on the Google page either but I thank you very much for mentioning it!

Deeli - you can indeed turn off Google instant! Click on the gear in the upper right corner click on settings and than untick Google instant. Than click "save settings" And by the way I use Google all the time. Have you tried igoogle.com? It allows you to set up your home page any way you like it. Give it a try.

By the way Firefox is a web browser and NOT a home page as this part of your post suggests. "Since you didn't mention what your home page is I am going to assume its Firefox." I am not sure where you came up with that idea.. If you are not happy with explorer there are many other web browsers that can be use such as Chrome, Opera, Firefox, etc.

More than likely the only reason that you are using IE in the first place as that is what comes as the default in Windows! That does not make it the best browser or the only browser that will work.
