Unique Christmas Gift Ideas for Long Distance Boyfriend?

There is a little bit of an age difference between me and my boyfriend. He is 3 years older than me and he doesn't live in the same state as me. I want to send him something for x-mas, but I have no idea what to do. I have very little money and I'm very crafty, but I'm not sure if he's into those kinds of things.

Just wanted to say, first, that I'm not going to preach to you about your relationship. (I'll just ask you to please be careful.) With that said, I'll tell you what I just bought my boyfriend. We also have a long-distance (400 miles away) relationship. I bought him a key chain with a quote "charm". Since my boyfriend is a sensitive guy, I know it is something he will love, Plus, he'll think of me every time he uses his keys - which is all day, every day. (Of course, it doesn't take a reminder for him to think of me. I'm sure your boyfriend is the same.)

Good luck with whatever gift you select.

If you don't know him well enough to know whether or not he likes come craft type of things, you don't know him well enough to be his girl friend. You could make him a CD of songs that you and he like together, or even if you have pictures of the two of you doing things together you could make a CD of that. Actually most of the time when you give somebody a gift, there isn't a definite way of knowing whether or not they will like it.

Perhaps you could ask him what he might like? Make it clear you have not much money but that you would love to make something homemade for him. I personally don't understand long distance boyfriend/girlfriend relationships.

How can you truly know one another when you're not seeing one another up close and personal from day to day?

I'm 16 and my boyfriend is 17 and we've been dating for just over 3 months. I don't know what to get him for Christmas. He lives 11 hours away from me and I'm not going to be able to see him at Christmas. He's a shy quiet guy, but loves pretty much anything.

I don't want suggestions like tickets to a game or getting him a shirt or something, I want a unique, but not really mushy idea for a present that he will think is sweet and adorable. For example, for my brother's birthday, his girlfriend got him a child's book called "I Like You" and it listed all the reasons she liked him. I want a suggestion like this, something that isn't common. Hopefully this is clear. Thanks!

Make him a scarf in a colour or colours he likes. Maybe match his eyes. It's easy to learn to knit from a book or from someone who knows how. Ask a grandma, mother, or an aunt and I'm sure they would love to teach you. A hand knit item feels like a hug! (11/12/2010)

OK, you could take candy bars and create a unique message with their titles and with few additional words from you come up with something like this: You are the "Bit O Honey" in my life. Think about all the candy bars names and what you can turn into something sweet for him. (11/12/2010)

Does he have any special likes? I saw that my son posted something on Facebook about wishing he had a certain painting. Even though I couldn't afford the painting, I Googled it and found a great picture of what he wanted. I downloaded the picture, bought an inexpensive white shirt and iron-on transfers and made him a custom shirt with the picture on it. He was thrilled. And it was quite inexpensive. (11/13/2010)

My little brother had a great gift for his girlfriend at Christmas a few years ago, their first in different states since graduating college. He bought her a plain calendar, no pictures or any of that stuff and wrote in it the days in which they had already planned to see each other and important dates like their birthdays and anniversary for the next year.

Once those special days were in he filled in all of the other days with reasons that they should see each other (essentially one reason a day that he was thinking about her, or vice versa.) He used an online calendar to find obscure and funny holidays that they could celebrate together even in different states and wrote those down, for the rest of the days he filled in different things, like:

"I'll wear that shirt you like today."

"Remember that time we dyed your hair blond? Let's not try that again!"
"If you come visit I'll make you pancakes"

"Anniversary of the first day we met, even though you wouldn't talk to me"

"We graduated one year ago today"

"The Cardinals play the Reds today, let's go see the game!" (They are baseball fans)

"It's Tuesday, come see me!"

"Daylight Savings Time ends...we could have an extra hour together!"

"Remember studying for finals? Glad we don't have to do that again."

When my husband and I were first dating I think I sent him a copy of "Guess How Much I Love You" with a bunch of phone cards (It hurts to admit, but that was in the pre-cell phone days).

That same Christmas that Eddie gave Megan the calendar my husband and I gave them webcams and headsets so that they could talk and see each other online...that could also be fun to give him too.

May I ask how you two are girlfriend and boyfriend for three months when you live probably a minimum of 600 miles away from each other? You must mean a guy friend you've known from your school or your neighborhood in the past and one of your families moved away? If that's the case a nice homemade personalized card with a poem or story you wrote postal mailed to him is quite enough and appropriate. If not, it's not wise to be having this relationship nor giving gifts or emotions.

I am not trying to be mean but do your parents even know about this long distance 'friend'? How are you so sure he is who he says he is and what age he really is if he is not someone you've known from your school or neighborhood? Have you ever watched Dateline's 'To Catch A Predator' or 'America's Most Wanted'?

I was a teenager once too and had a boyfriend crush but that person lived in my neighborhood and my parents knew him and his parents. There were perils in dating even back then but there are many more perils now and especially when it comes to having no realistic way of truly knowing someone from afar. (11/13/2010)

If you like the picture book idea, why don't you try making him one yourself. You could draw, or maybe get pictures off the internet. You could write the story of your first date or or something like that. Or if you are good with the computer, maybe a Powerpoint with pictures of you two doing stuff, assuming you have some, with your favorite song. (11/13/2010)

You should send him a camera and a microphone for his computer if he doesn't have that stuff already. So you two can skype together. (11/16/2010)
