I know this trick works for people that don't want a cat jumping in a cot so it should work for a bath as well - just fill it with blown up balloons. The cat will get a fright and not want to go back. Hope that helps.
If this unusual for this cat to do this, it may be a good idea to take him to the vet. This may be a sign that he is sick. Since our pets can't talk, they sometimes will act out of character when they are sick.
If you don't want to keep the bathroom door closed, try using two sided sticky tape attached to a piece of cardboard. Put this in the tub when not in use. After a while, he should stop but he may find another spot to use. Good luck and please be patient.

Please take your cat to the vet! When my cat did this he had a urinary infection and needed treatment. He had never had an accident in 8 years, then started using the tub and corners of the room. 2 trips to the vet and some meds and he has been as good as new. If you look in a cat book this behavior is common among cats who need veterinary help.
I read somewhere to put the litter box in the bathtub for easy cleanup. Maybe he is trying to tell you something. Breaking a male cat from peeing somewhere is torture. I would just put an extra litter box in there. When someone wants to take a bath, take the box out, put it outside of the bathroom and wash the tub out. Lots better than fighting with the cat. I have a female cat who likes to poop in the bathtub. If we close the door, she'll just go on the throw rug in the guest room. We have 2 litter boxes for one cat, but she still likes to use the tub once in a while.
How about putting about an inch of cold water into the tub?

I agree with katklaw777 and mkymlp, get him to a vet. An undiagnosed/untreated UTI in a male is fatal.
Nothing is wrong with your cat, my tiffany tabby does the same thing. He's very smart, my husband noticed every morning when he would get up to pee, our cat would follow and then one morning he heard something looked behind the shower curtain and our cat was peeing right over the drain. He just learned it and honestly it's nothing disgusting like people try to make it, simply run the water a few secs. to make sure nothings left.
Also our cats mom who we no longer have did the same thing only when needed. We went on vacation and her litter box was getting full so she started using the tub (her litter box was in the bathroom) and when we came home it was a proud moment because instead of using the bathroom all over the house she tried to keep it in the bathroom. Cats are smart, (not all obviously) but many are and not always out trying to be bad.
Never heard the one about the cat maybe having UTI or something, but seems to be mention all over the web when I searched for how to stop my cat from peeing in the tub. A friend of mine has a cat that always does it, and she just rinses the tub out a couple of times a day.
52 Years ago I had a gorgeous long haired Red Tabby Male I named him Sandy he was a rescued kitten we never had litter boxes in those days nor cat flaps - I let him out when he wailed at the back door and he came home when he wanted! He was adorable I loved him to bits! he never peed in the house he just waited till he was let out -- Then one day when he was about 4 yrs old he started peeing in the bath, I thought he just could not hold it any longer - I cleaned the bath and thought how nice and easy it was to clean it up so I did not mind -- Then a week or two later it started to be a daily thing with him every morning he had peed in the bath again I did not worry about it -- But then one morning his pee was almost pure blood and he was lying in the bath I thought he was dying -- I rushed him to the Vet and they examined him and found that his bladder was clogged with what they called sand crystals so they cleaned his bladder out and gave him antibiotics kept him in for a few days and then I brought him home - the vet told me that some male cats when the are neutered start making the crystals because he holds his pee in too long so every time he peed in the bath I took him straight to the vet!
