Squirrels and Chipmunks Eating My Bulbs?

What can you do to keep squirrels and chipmunks from eating all flower bulbs? I have tried hair and it only works for a short time.

Hardiness Zone: 6a

Have you tried laying chicken wire over the area? You can anchor the wire by placing large rocks on the wire. Chicken wire is avialable at hardware stores.

Try planting them deeper. Bulbs should be planted about twice as deep as their size. Otherwise, get chickenwire or a cat.

I have the same problem. I have found that ground, black pepper around the flower beds keeps little rodents out. They start digging, get a snoot full of pepper, have a sneezing fit and never come back.

Buy some bulk ground pepper and be generous with it, It will take a couple weeks for them to learn your flower beds aren't fun.

You can also make little chicken wire "pots" for each bulb - wrap the chicken wire around a 1 quart cottage cheese container (or similar size), including the bottom, so it looks like a cup or pot. dig the hole deep enough for the whole pot, put soil in the bottom of the pot, then your bulb, then fill with soil. This way, the little rodents can't get to the bulbs from underneath... You may also need to put chicken wire about an inch under the top of the garden bed soil to discourage digging...
