Customizing Wedding Accessories

For the most part, weddings can be quite costly. I have a tip that can help you cut the cost on a few needed items. If you don't sew, a glue gun will work. And if time is a factor, discount fixer uppers are great to! The items that you 'll be checking off your list are:

  • ring pillow
  • guest book
  • pen
  • flower girl basket
  • unity candle with sides

Materials:

  • glue gun
  • needle with matching thread
  • small basket with handle
  • a large 8 inch candle
  • 2 small matching candles for the unity sides (you may or may not need)
  • lace
  • ribbon
  • silk flowers
  • butterflies
  • pearls
  • rhinestones, etc.

Note: For those that sew or are having their dresses made, the scrap fabric and lace will be great for this project. They can be used for the ring pillow, guest book, and flower girl basket.

For those who are non-sewers or short on time, you can find inexpensive an guest book, ring pillow, a small basket, and pen (to match the guest book).

Instructions:

Ring Pillow: Arrange your silk flowers. Tie or pin them to your ring pillow to see if that's the look you wanted. Set them aside and cut and lay out the ribbon, lace, or fabric on the ring pillow. Carefully glue these items onto the pillow. Then add your flowers, pearls, etc. Made to order just for you.

Guest Book: With your guest book open, cut a piece of fabric, adding 1 inch on all 4 sides. Measure out your lace, ribbon or whatever is else is needed for your guest book. Open your guest book, fold the edges over and iron down (away from your book and watch the fingers!) This will give your book a finished edge. Glue the edge down on one side, (allow that side to cool before gluing the othe side.) Make sure you can close your book before gluing this side! Now you can glue the lace, ribbon, etc. Last glue your flowers (a small arrangement is nice).

Flower Girl Basket: Cut a large circle of fabric (make sure it's large enough to cover the basket bottom). Fold the edges over and glue them to the inside of the basket. Glue the center of each side, then you may need to do a little gathering as you glue the fabric down. Then add your ribbon, lace, etc.

Pen: For your pen, add your own lace, pearls, rhinestones, to have it match your guest book, keeping in mind where someone needs to hold your pen to write.

Unity Candles: Now you may be able to find your candles in the dollar store or for a few dollars at Wal-mart. Use a tacky craft glue for this. Put a little on a paper plate or something. Let it begin to dry for about 10 minutes (it will help it to stick better.) If you want to add your names and date, you can use a calligraphy marker.

Using a toothpick (after the names, etc. has dried), you can now glue your pearls, rhinestones, or very small flowers, etc., to the unity candle. Do just a little to the unity sides. (Be careful not to decorate too close to the top, leave at 1 1/2 to 2 inches from the top of the candle.)

Those are excellent ideas and I'm definitely going to use them for my wedding. I really like your idea about using scrap material for the ring pillow, flower basket, and guest book. The person that I have making my accessories will love the idea of saving money and being able to recycle used fabric and swatches.

Keep up the good work. I'll take some pictures of my finished product and post it after I get married in August.

Great tips! I could have used them last July, when I got married! I'll be sure to keep them in mind to pass on to friends and family.
