I've never built a go-cart, but wouldn't a gasoline engine be much better than electric?
The problem with electric is that it would operate on a battery which has to be recharged. When the battery is no longer rechargeable, you will have to purchase a brand new one, and they are very expensive.
Build with a gas engine because it's simpler to build, maintain and you will get more power. With a gas engine, there are many choices for engines hp to consider for a small child, older child, adult, or for racing.
