Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 190 Posts

Vol. 5, Num. 21, May 26, 2010

Hi, today's crafts focus on more projects for kids and a cute gift for the hair bow lover among us. The throw pillow would be fun for boys and girls alike depending on the fabric chosen. Turn them loose on the "silly putty" project and watch the creativity shine.

We are looking for more craft ideas to share with the ThriftyFun members. In particular if you have any ideas for Father's Day crafts or more summer kid's crafts, please consider submitting them here: http://www.thriftyfun.com/post_craft.ldml.

Many of our submissions are entered in one of our weekly contests.  Be sure to give a "thumbs up" to your favorite posts as we use these ratings to select a winner.

Craft Project: Throw Pillow

Here's a really quick and easy pillow that I did with the girls using their choice of a sewing machine or hand stitching with a needle and thread using all straight stitching. Eight year olds were able to do this with remarkable ease and very good results.

Tips:

Organizing Beads and Buttons

I love the texture and color of beads and buttons. Until recently, each attempt to organize them usefully failed. I found a shelf at a yard sale and washed small bottles until all of my beads and buttons can be seen. Moving the bottles around helps me plan projects and I can enjoy my collection every day.

Watch Out for Lead Content in Crystal Beads

I do a lot of crafts and had always been intimidated by bead work and jewelry making. I took a couple of classes at Michaels and now I'm hooked. I went online looking for less expensive supplies. There are many sites out there and along with the purchase of supplies, I got a lot of instructions for making items and very good information about beads and such.

Swarovski (Austrian) crystals are gorgeous and shine brilliantly. But what makes them so dangerous is the very high lead content in them. I refuse to use them for that very reason. Semi-precious stones, gemstones, and even glass beads can be used to make very pretty items.

Making a Cupcake Shaped Flower Arrangement

I saw a "cupcake" that is a small floral arrangement and I'd like to make one of my own. The "paper cupcake liner" looks to be a small terra cotta pot with ridges. The "cupcake frosting" is actually a mound of white carnations.

Any suggestions as to how I can achieve the terra cotta ridged "cupcake liner"?

Making Plarn Crafts to Benefit Library

I work at a library and we have a huge amount of newspaper sleeves. I have started exploring the idea of having some of our teen patrons make plarn balls. Then we could either sell them to someone to benefit the library or send the plarn to someone for them to make something for each of them or something big to raffle off. How do I locate volunteers to create these recycled crafts? Thank you.
