Moving to Roswell, New Mexico?

Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 228 Posts

I would like to see categories for each of the United States. I am in Missouri but looking to move to Roswell, New Mexico. My request is: What are some tips to living or life in Roswell New Mexico? Where are the best places to shop? What are some good community links to visit (non-thematic i.e. aliens or the ufo crash of 1947). Things that people do in the desert as opposed to things people do when living in the plains of the Midwest interest me!

I know there are tornadoes there as there are here because I saw pictures. What time do you get up in the morning to finish outdoor chores before it's too hot?
What time do you put dinner in the oven at night so you don't heat up the house worse than it might be? Do you have to be on the lookout for rattlesnakes and scorpions all the time or is that just in the movies?

Do you get a lot of water rationing? Or do they call it something else? Do you get "boil orders" like we have had around here after a lot of rain and it floods and the water is believed to be contaminated? I have a lot of questions and some of them I haven't thought of yet! Can you tell me about sand storms?

Any input is welcomed!

There's a nifty website for you to look up and discuss such information. It is city-data.com. I hope this helps answer your questions.
God bless and good luck in your move.

I live in El Paso, TX, and have family in Roswell. As with any town, there are good and bad things about it.

Yes, it gets hot here in the desert southwest. During the summer, you need to get everything done early in the day and try to stay inside as much as you can. And the sandstorms can be wicked, again you learn to stay inside and keep everything shut up tight.

Roswell is not too far from Ruidoso, NM, which is a vacation spot. They have winter skiing and horse races during the springtime. Wonderful places to shop. Lots of craft shows and farmers markets in the area also.

You will absolutely love the beautiful sunsets you will get in the desert. This is my favorite part of the day. If you like authentic Mexican food, you will find it here.

As far as the water rationing, I am not sure about Roswell, we do have it here in El Paso. From April until October we can only water on certain days (3 days per week) and at certain hours (before 10am and after 6pm).

Roswell does have a military academy if I remember correctly. I think there is also a cheese factory there.

As far as the critters. Here in El Paso, I have found many scorpions in my house. They come in from the arroyo that is behind us. Thank goodness that my dog usually alerts me to them. I have been stung once, on Christmas Day several years ago. It was mighty painful for awhile, but I was still able to get dinner fixed.

Rattlesnakes don't usually come up to the houses, they stay out in the desert. So unless you go hiking or camping, you will probably not see one of them.

Hope I have helped to answer some of your questions.

I lived in Roswell in the late 50's because my hubby was stationed there. It gets very hot in the afternoon. You have to keep the house shut tight when the sand storms blow but you will still get some in the house. I never had any prob with snakes but sure did with scorpions and torantillas. We kept the legs of the bed in cups with stuff in to discourage them from climbing in the bed.

In the morning we made sure to shake our boots n shoes out real good. Also they have some of the largest roaches I have ever in my life seen. But the scenery there is outstanding. Would I ever live there again. You can bet on it

I live in New Mexico just outside of Albuquerque. The southwest is very different from Missouri, not as green but practically no humidity. The weather can get hot (it is the desert!) so plan on doing outside chores, etc. in the mornings during the summer. The winter is usually very moderate, jackets are usually enough to keep us warm. The post about Ruidoso is right on - beautiful part of our state.

The bugs here are not so bad - you will need to keep your eyes open for scorpions and centipedes. Mostly, they will stay outside but we've found a few in our house and yard. Rattlesnakes don't want to be around you any more than you want to be around them.

Mostly, watch if you are out hiking or camping. I prefer to live with these type of bugs way more than the type we had in Kansas.

I believe they do get storms in Roswell that can produce tornadoes so you will need to prepare just like the mid-west. When it does rain, we don't usually get boil orders since we hardly ever flood here. You will probably want to read up on desert gardening since the soil is very different here from what you're used to.

In October, be sure to visit Albuquerque for the Balloon Fiesta. Usually there are over 700 hot air balloons here for 10 days with all sorts of fun activities for families.

Good luck on your move!

Cindy
