Use Popcorn as Packing Material

Another packing material: popcorn! You can buy 10 pound bags of popcorn for very little money. All you need to do is get out your air popper, and 10 pounds of popcorn will probably fill up a very large move.

I really did this for one move when I went across country. I didn't have any significant breakage. Is it better than some of the eco-hostile packaging materials available? Probably not, but most things are not fragile crystal, anyway.

Not to mention, that you are using completely biodegradable material and if you arrive somewhere when you've just moved, have no food around, and are really desperate, there's always stale popcorn to eat until you get your phone service hooked up!

Oh, this brings back memories of an old job... One lady came in to mail her package and used popcorn, but don't make her mistake -- don't use the buttered variety! As she was stuffing the envelope, it became all buttery and she ended up mailing it that way. Gross! But great tip! :)

Love the idea, including that you can eat the stale popcorn - LOL! You have my thumbs up for a clever environmentally safe alternative :-)

Just so everyone knows there is manufactured biodegradable (instead of styrofoam) popcorn packaging available that's made out of cornstarch. You can put it in the yard and it will dissolve into the soil without harm to the environment and you can also simply place in your kitchen sink, run water over it and it will dissolve and go down the drain without clogging the drain pipes.

It also pads and protects delicate items far better than food popcorn (that breaks apart) will. You can also store it for future use as long as it's kept moisture free. I had an Aveda Concept hairstyling salon for many years and learned about this packaging because that's what Aveda used to ship all the hair, skin, cosmetic and perfume products ordered for salon use and retail sales.

Definitely a great tip. Of course, I suppose if you have no air popper, you could pop the stuff on the stove if you use the bare minimum of oil, besides, you can bag up the stuff as you unpack (use a 30-gallon garbage bag,) you have instant snacks for days. :D
