Saving Money on Haircuts for Guys

Ways to save money on haircuts for men and boys. Post your own here.

Trim Between Haircuts

I have clippers but don't dare use them. However, I did find something I could do that was pretty safe. My son was between haircuts and the hair at the back of the neck was starting to grow southward. So I took the clipper and cut it off, using the professional barber's nicely rounded hair shape.

In fact, my son liked it so well, that he told me to bring the clippers with him when I went for a visit. I forgot, so we compromised and used the side burn shaver on his electric razor. The clippers worked faster and better.

Straight Razor and Comb

My husband, ever since we've been married, has cut his own hair. He uses a comb that has a straight edge razor blade in it. He says he's used this for many, many years. He's not set foot in a barber's shop since finding his razor comb. No telling the money he's saved, otherwise!

Robocut

I have clippers that we paid $60.00 for 3 years ago. I use them on both my sons. I loved all the money I was saving not to mention not having to make a day out of sitting at the hair dressers waiting our turn, then of course a tip on top of all that. I decided I wanted something to do my hair at home to. I bought a robocut off of ebay. It does the greatest cuts on myself and my dog too, lol. Just hook it up to the vacuum and away you go.

Buy Hair Clippers

Instead of going to the barber shop for a haircut my husband and I bought a set of hair clippers for about $50. After a couple of haircuts the clippers have paid for themselves many times over. I also cut my sons' hair with them. Now I save 3 times as much!

Maintaining Hair Clippers

I gave about $30 for ours. We have had them for years. Just keep them oiled and clean and you can change the razors on them to keep them sharp. My husband cuts his own hair and our son's. Has been doing it for many years. Now just to save more money on mine and daughters hair.

Money Saved

I have been cutting my husband's hair now for 28 years. It has saved a lot of money. I also cut my two son's hair ages 21 and 16. The older son one time wanted to be like all of his friends and go to a shop to get his hair cut, that only lasted one time, he couldn't go in his PJs, he had to get dressed to go, wait his turn, then when he saw how much it was to get it cut, his said he would rather put that money toward "his savings". He was about 18 at the time, and those are his words.

Give It a Try

I cut my husband's hair ever since we retired. We bought a clipper set at Walmart for around $20 - it does a fine job and it really isn't as hard as some would make it seem. I do sometimes cut it too short on the sides so it doesn't lay down right for awhile, but that is the only part I have trouble with and he is perfectly satisfied with it. These are things that I think people are afraid to try to do for themselves - give it a try - you learn by doing and you get better with age!

Marine Stylist

I paid 20 for mine, Conair. Not bad! My husband shaves his head, but cuts my oldest (and will start the baby in a year) hair, along with some friends. He learned in the Marine Corps and from his Mother, who used to cut his. I have blond straight hair, so he says I must go to a salon, since he doesn't want to jeopardize our marriage, lol!

So glad I don't have more girls in the house!

I have been cutting DH's hair for several years. I have cut my own hair since I was a teen. We had a clipper set to fold it's wings a few months ago and went to replace it. We couldn't find the very same one so we bought a more expensive set. This one had a 1 inch guide in addition to the ones the other set had.

I have started using that on my hair. I keep it very short and this works perfectly. As a very stingy pair of people we are thrilled with the savings. It made life much easier when he was going through his colon cancer and accompanying surgeries. I was able to keep him looking neat.

About 10 years ago, I convinced my son to try long hair. It grew long, full and lush, and was quite a "chick-magnet' lol. He now pays for his OWN barber visits, because his girlfriend isn't amused by the women who approach purring "ooOOo, can I touch your hair?" (hint, keep it shampooed and shiny looking)

I was watching a rerun of Family Feud on TV the other day. One father of three boys said he went to barber school to learn to cut their hair. Of course the boys are grown now, but he saved lots of money doing it that way. (And they didn't have to go around looking like their mom did it. lol) Just think of the extra money he's been able to put in their college funds because of his thrifty ways!

Years ago when my oldest twin sons were small (they're 18 and in college) a friend who is also my hairdresser one day drew me a diagram and showed me how to cut their hair. I've cut my four guy's hair ever since, saving $100's of dollars...some jobs were better than others, but my guys have basically been fine with my haircuts. My husband is the sweetest, saying that in two weeks it doesn't matter if something wasn't quite straight.
One of my twins recently went and got a cut from the salon, and I think I've done just as well all of these years.
The best thing to remember is to remove distractions, don't let them have a mirror, and remember to take a deep breath and pray before you start. :o) By the way, no one's fired me, but no one's paid me either...(except in non-monetary ways, says my hubby. :o) Kim

I try to keep things in their proper perspective. I trim my beard (usually) twice a year whether it needs it or not. My hair is falling out pretty well so it's hardly worth the bother.

I get a kick out of people who say they *need* a haircut or the grass *needs* mowing. Face it, folks: neither your hair or your lawn cares if it gets cut or not. Sure, people might look at you funny, but odds are they'd look just as funny even if you weren't there.

For Melody_yesterday: most of the hair trimmers come with videos on how to cut hair, and cover this. My hub does a fade, with the shortest for sides and back, then uses a longer one on top, evening out with the scissors and fine comb. Here is a link for a dvd, it is 27.50 but filled with ALOT of information...I may buy it for myself!

Guys, if you have nice hair, go a bit longer between cuts. Lots of women like longer hair on guys! You don't have to adopt the full-on "hippie" look, just a little length looks great and you'll save by not visiting the barber/stylist as often. Also balding men look very sexy with the simple shaved head look. It's very popular now. That look would not require a stylist I don't think.

I am not a beautician but have cut my husband and son's hair (when son lived at home) forever and still do hubby's. About every 3-4 years I buy new clippers. (Cheaper than getting them sharpened). My daughter's hair and mine we did/do go to the professional.
