EasyInstructions
Freshen and Deodorize Carpet
Step 1 Mix 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup corn starch and 1 teaspoon vinegar. Sprinkle this all over your carpet and let it sit overnight. Vacuum the carpet in the morning, leaving behind a fresh scent.

Step 2 Steam clean or shampoo your carpets with a solution of vinegar and extremely hot water instead of commercial shampoo. Vinegar cleans by loosening dirt, while deodorizing. You can also wash your carpet one section at a time using a sponge and a solution of vinegar and warm water.

Step 3 Put an end to mold by spraying the area with full strength vinegar. Sprinkle salt to absorb the moisture left by the vinegar. Vacuum up the salt. Repeat once a day for up to 5 days.

Step 4 Clean up after your yet-to-be housetrained pet using vinegar and salt. Use a plastic bag to scoop up as much of the solid mess a possible. Clean the area with vinegar and then sprinkle salt to absorb as much of the moisture as possible. This not only cleans, but also disinfects and deodorizes as well. Good luck.

You can buy a box of scented baking soda at Family Dollar that is used on carpet. Leave it set awhile then vacuum up.

Also, I was in another country and saw one of the maids use a wet mop over the carpet. I was in awe as I'd never seen anybody or even heard of anyone using a mop on carpet, but that's how this hotel cleaned their carpets and it was clean and odor free.

I thought I'd give it a try on an older carpeted floor and see if it would freshen up the room and it did. Just wring out the mop well and you can use your favorite cleaner as long as it doesn't contain oils.

You'd be surprised at how good of a job it does between shampooing. Rinse the mop out several times to keep the water clean. I added a tiny bit of bleach for deodorizing purposes and it did not lift any color from the carpet as it was a weak solution. When the carpet dries in a few hours you can really tell a difference in the freshness of the room.
