Agree with annparker, rasta and bambam--check this link out:

The National Institute for Health gives iodine a "maybe" in possibly reducing incidence of cyst growth in breast tissue--these cysts aren't necessarily the malignant kind. After Googling the NIH and the Mayo Clinic, it seems that the consensus is that if you live in a developed country, chances are that you're probably getting enough iodine in your diet already.

Overuse of iodine can lead to a host of other nasty little side effects ( you'll see 'em on the link).

I think if your family history warrants keeping a close eye on your breast checkups--you're far better off seeing your doc on a regular basis than home-medicating with iodine.

Here are a couple of interesting links for more information....

This last one is specifically about iodine and hypothyroidism, but an interesting site w/great pictures.

I just want to be clear that I am not a doctor and I am not recommending anyone start taking iodine on their own. Please consult your health care practitioner before deciding to take iodine on your own. There are many pieces to this puzzle and, as always in medicine, one size does NOT fit all.

There are many places to get lugol's iodine solution. There is 2%, 5%, 7% & 15%. Do your research to find out how much to take, also, start with really low doses. If you're in need, you can get some pretty strong side effects when the body is in need, for making thyroid hormones, it can make you ache all over.

So go slow. Iodoral is pretty expensive, lugol's is pretty cheap.

No one should take iodine suppliments without asking their doctor. Iodine effects the thyroid and if you don't need it you could cause yourself trouble. Studies have shown that Americans get all the iodine they need in their diets. Most food is processed with iodized salt.

I'm sure there are a lot of survivors that think you're crazy. If there was something that simple there wouldn't be any breast cancer.

Sounds like a "snake oil treatment" as my doctor says. Bambam you are right as well as Ann Parker. Like a lot of suggestions on this site you have to beware and keep an open mind. I love Thrifty Fun and there are some very helpful hints but just be ware.
