Preserving Pinecones?

Bronze Feedback Medal for All Time! 239 Feedbacks

About 20 years ago my father-in-law climbed trees in California (he was 85 then) to get me some of the largest pine cones I had ever seen. I didn't ask and was willing to gather a few from the ground.

Anyway, I have kept them in a box and only get them out during Christmas, but now I'm wanting to do something to preserve them as they are. I imagine I should spray them with something, but I don't know what and fear experimenting, because I might ruin them. Does anybody know how to do this?

Try just spraying them with extra-strength hairspray to preserve them. I have used it on leaves, so it should work on pinecones, too.

This article suggests spraying with clear acrylic spray, polyurethane or spray varnish.

If you use Design Master Spray, glossy wood tone, it combines a wood tone and glossy acrylic finish. It takes them back to a beautiful natural finish. If you want a deeper finish you can let them dry and then add another coat to darken them.

It is best to apply lighter coats, and watch for drips...I have been a florist for over 40 years and we still use this product on our sugar cones every Christmas.
