What can I use on my dog that has hot spots on his skin? He is always scratching and biting his skin. Thanks, I need some hope.

A number of years ago a Thriftyfun reader submitted a home remedy. A number of readers responded to that post saying they had tried the remedy and that it had worked well. I kept the hint, thinking I might very well need it for our loveable, furry, Australian Shepherd, Drover. He's now an old man, 14 years old, and I never had the occasion to try the remedy. Here it is, very simple. Mix equal amounts of original Listerine mouthwash, unscented baby oil and warm water, perhaps 1/3 or 1/2 cup of each. Pour in a spray bottle and shake well, then spray the hot spots several times a day. I hope it works for you.
Probably an allergy or bad yeast. Pet store owner said to try one of two things, put vinegar in their food or on the paw. My dog didn't want to anything to do with either one. So she also had me try giving him a tablet of Brewer's Yeast with Garlic in with his food, he loves it.
I definitely will be trying these suggestions on our big dog. She's red bone and yellow lab mix and will lick her ankles and hips until she has open sores on them. This is definitely worth a try if it gives her some relief. Thank you.
This may sound crazy but try bacon grease. A friend told me about this remedy and it really worked! Just rub a bit of the bacon grease on the spots and within a day the spot will begin to heal. We had an old German Shepard that would be fine when we left in the morning but when we got home at night he would of chewed half of his back raw!
Next time you are at a nursery or plant sale, see if you can get an
Aloe Vera plant. Split the leaf and open as much as you can. (remove any spines if neccessary) then spread the wonderful green slime on your pets skin. This will help immensely. The plant in not poinsonous, but doesn't taste good, so they won't lick it. A word of warning, it does stain a bit, so be careful around furniture, clothes, etc. The leaf can be reused, just tuck it in a plastic sandwich bag and put in fridge. It's worked for my critters.

Please take your baby to the Veterinarian. I have worked for a Veterinarian for over 20 years and Hot Spots can be very painful and become infected. Your Doctor will clip/clean the infected and give an injection to relieve the itching and he/she will probably send you home with an antibiotic.
Short term fix. Athletes foot spray, Vicks vapo rub. My best ever is Nzymes granules included in diet. Amazing stuff. All of mine will never be without it. Cures skin of allergies, fungus, stink and the like. Does amazing things for overall health. Big help is getting rid of fleas ( dry 20 mule team Borax in carpets, cedercide spread in yard) diet change to some raw nothing from grocery store aisle as it is mostly filler garbage. No corn wheat or soy (including cookie treats) . Home prepared is less expensive and so healthy. Favorite is washed lentils and same amount short grain brow rice, ground turkey, a little coconut oil, or flax oil, or fish oil .
Maybe if the veterinarians didn't charge people through their a** then maybe one could afford to take their animal when needed instead of trying to find home remedies

My granddaughter has a poodle that has several large nasty hot spots the one on the paw was open down to bone. well they moved in with us and so her aunt has taken on the wounds she gave him 1/2 tablet of Benradryl morning and night which stopped the constant licking and then because the foot was really bad we had some keflex liquid antibiotic left from the granddaughter's tonsilectomy today 1 wk later the foot has healed no hair back yet but the bone is not showing and the hip is healed.
The best thing for hotspots is Betagen. You can only get it from a vet. It works very fast. My poodle use to get them a lot so I changed her diet to a good quality food. She may get one once a year now. I spray Betagen on a cotton ball and in a couple of hours the medicine is working and no more itching. I always have Betagen on hand cause it doesn't take much.
