Sewer Smell in Laundry Room?

When starting a load of clothes in our top load washer, after the water starts running and filling the washer, a horrible, almost sewer smell stinks up the washing room. What is this smell and how do we get rid of it?

We only wash with cold water and none of the clothes have this stench to them after washing. Our other water sources in the house don't have this smell either (shower, sink, toilet) and the drinking water (well water) doesn't taste or smell any different. What could be causing this?

You might want to look inside the pipes that are going to your machine. Something might be stuck in there or they might just need to be replaced. Good luck!

We had a similar problem last year. After desperately trying to find out where the odor was coming from, we finally poured some Nok-Out down the drain where the water drains from the washer, and it seems to have helped. Every now and again the odor starts coming back, but we just use more Nok-Out. Hope this helps! Good luck!

You may need to run a snake down. I'm wondering if the air vent is partially plugged. Those odors are supposed to be expelled through the vent pipe that goes up through a wall and out the roof.

Do you have a sink nearby you haven't used in a while? If so then run some water in it. What happens is the water in the P-trap will evaporate and allow the gasses to come back into your laundry room.
