Help, I dont have a whole lot of money and it's Christmas time!

Category Advice

It's Christmas time and I'm low on cash. I've asked my mom if she will pay me a little extra money if I did odd jobs and she agreed but i still need more to cover my family. I was also thinking about making my own gifts for everyone but I'm not sure what everyone would want. I have the pickiest brother in the world, he asked me to buy him a 100 dollar chair for him, so far that's all he wants.

I don't have that kind of money. Should I make him something? Any ideas? He's 19, we are an irish family, he likes rap music and progressive rock (OAR and Wheezer). He also has a white Ford truck. If you have any homemade ideas, let me know.

Thanks,

Molly

You could look on the internet for cheap gifts or how to make cute gifts.Go to search and write "how to make cheap gifts".Or overstock.com .They have a 'free shipping ' thing on everything right now.If you have children blaircandy.com has little size candy for like 2.00.You could get him a movie off overstock.Or shop at an everything is a dollar store.

Check out the dollar store. They have a large selection of male items; tools, car pastes to clean, and many other things that he might be able to use for his truck. You can also find many other items that are great as gifts there.

Molly, I don't mean to sound offensive, but if your brother expects you to buy him a hundred-dollar gift, and he realizes that you can't afford it, I wouldn't worry too much about spending much money on his gift. He should realize that it is the thought, and you sound like a very thoughtful sister.

Ask your mom and dad if they will split the cost with you--- IF you are certain that you want to buy him the expensive gift.

Maybe you could find something that doesn't look cheap for his truck. Look in the discount stores, or the dollar stores. If you can't find anything for his truck, buy him a gift certificate in the amount that you can afford.

For other gifts, you could make personalized pillow cases with monograms on them. Does your mother have a sewing machine that monograms?

You could make some fudge, or promise to do someone's chores for a few days. Look for sales, and especially in the clearance departments.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very Merry Christmas, and to everyone in your family.

Start with a budget and find gifts to match it. That's the best way to go. If you can't get something that you know someone wants, get something they know they need or could use.

I have found that anything made of wood always seems like you spent a little more money or a little more time creating it....and many times it does take more time but it's worth the savings........find wood to recyle, like broken pallets from a factory and the like.......the wood is almost always free and salvagable, and even if you are not good with wood tools, even a cheap hack saw and some sand paper and stain can help you make simple but elegant shelves and things of that sort.....and it's amazing how much wood a small can of stain can cover.........and maybe you even have a friend who owns some wood working tools that you can use at thier home....never borrow.....stick around their house so they can answer any questions, it's safer working with someone who knows the equipment,

creativity can go along way if you give a good look for ideas on the internet and magazines which you can check out at the library or read them at doctors offices for free......

Molly,

First, I want to say, "YES, absolutely make your own gifts!" Your friends and family will love them no matter what you make because gifts of skill and time say "You're special."

One idea for your brother might be to buy a cheap Christmas stocking and draw his name and a Christmas symbol (holly, tree, snowflake, etc.) on it in glittery puffy paint. Then fill the stocking with candy and dollar store toys.

Another idea for your brother might be a T-Shirt Pillow.

Molly, By any chance does your brother wear those cool beanies everyone is wearing now? You can buy them on EBay for as cheap as 99 cents. Just go to EBay and search for "beanies." Good luck - picky guys are really hard to buy for!

(Does he read anything?? Maybe you could get him a subscription to a car magazine or something for like $15) And I think the Tee-Shirt pillow is a great idea!! GL :)

You can save a lot on CD's for your brother if you buy used ones on E-bay. I've bought some of the new Nickelback CD's on E-bay and they were only slightly used.

Your brother likes "Rap Music"? There is no such thing. There is "Rap" and there is "Music". They have nothing to do with one another. I've been making music for forty years, so I am pretty sure I know what music is, and "Rap" ain't it.

As far as a Christmas gift, my suggestion would be to buy yourself a good bread-making machine, and bake him a loaf of good bread. You can bake bread for everyone on your list, and I will give you recipes (I've got a lot of them, some original). I also usually use a baking stone and just use the machine to mix everything up and let it rise, and then after its final rise I bake it on the stone in the oven. It's wonderful bread, and it contains more love than any chair in the world.

A Christmas gift isn't about money, it's about love. I hope your brother will understand this.

Give the gift of self! This does not cost a dime just some of your time. You can make cards with maybe four options of something you can do for someone. I do this for my close friends, I design little buisness cards with a Holiday Greeting & give them 1 of 4 options: One free Babysitting Day, Cook their family Dinner, Maid for a Day, One day of Pampering these are nice and fun!! I also put valid from and expiration dates on the cards (Good for use within 6 months)

O.K. for your brother, maybe one month of Laundry Service (most guys his age don't like washing) or you could get an inexpensive CD Holder, you can find these for under $10.00.Another option a gift card to Tower Records $15.00 or you can join BMG Music they have alot of those 12 CD's for $1.00. You have two years to buy 4 at the regular price! I hope this helps.

Another "truck" idea....
Make your brother a gift basket of car washing items (sponge, carwash soap, wax, tire brush, etc.) and make him coupons redeemable for car washes
(by you). You can put them all in a bucket and put a bow on top. Most of these items can be found at the $ store.

I had the recipe...But seem to have misplaced it. It had turpentine in it and some other ingredients I have the misfortune of not being able to recall.

It consisted of pouring the solution on the image side of any picture and laying the gooey side face down on a tee shirt, and after the allotted time (which I of course can't remember) you would peel the paper off..
Help...
Does anyone know this one:)
Thanks

RE: Making Money at Christmas Time

Hi Molly -

Try this to make some extra money immediately

It's no secret that one of the fastest ways to generate some quick cash is to sell stuff around the house that you don't use anymore . . .

But even if you're an Olympic gold medalist "pack rat" like me, you'll soon run out of things to unload.

So go to http://www.ExtraMoneyForChristmas... and download my FREE report that explains one of the absolute best strategies I know for finding an endless supply of items at NO cost.

In the mini-report, you will learn *exactly* how to find FREE stuff to sell . . .

Then it's up to you whether to have a garage sale, advertise for free on Craigslist or hold an auction on eBay . . . whatever cash you rake in will be almost pure profit!

Hope that helps ...

Merry Christmas to you and your family !!!

Frontrunner
