Burnt Sugar Cake

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 egg yolks (save whites)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup water or milk
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • Advertisement

  • 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 stiff beaten egg whites, fold in

Burnt Sugar Syrup

  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup boiling water

Burnt Sugar Frosting:

  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup sweet cream
  • chunk of butter

Directions:

For cake: Mix ingredients in order given. Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes.

For Syrup: Melt sugar in skillet and stir until smokes intently (dark brown and smooth). Remove from heat and add boiling water; return to stove and stir rapidly until molasses-like syrup results. Pour over cake.

For Frosting: Boil ingredients until soft ball stage, then beat to a cream and spread on cake.
