Treating Earaches at Home

I have always suffered from ear aches during the cold windy season, and if I am swimming (I had repeated infections when I was in my teens). My doctor has recommended that I clear my ears by sucking in and pushing out to make the muscles below the ear work out.

Each time I feel an earache coming on, I repeat these exercises and it works wonderfully. No more aspirin, no more sleepless nights.

Try it!

I'll certainly consider the exercise, but want to pass on the medical fact that "artificial butter flavoring" is an additive to popcorn, breads, and crackers/cookies that causes earaches in me and my family, as well as respiratory infections and worse in many folks.... the chemical is called Diacetyl
"the vapors emitted from butter flavoring are a complex mixture that produces necrosis that cannot be explained by the known toxicological properties of any of its components." (Hubbs, et al. 2002)" from the website; http://thepumphandle.wordpress.com

It took trial and error and a lot of discussion among the mothers at Homeschool Coop to finally discover that a father has always had a long history with such difficulties and is a popcorn fanatic. Once discovered and eliminated, he healed and never ate it nor suffered ever again.

Bacteria likely gets stuck in the sticky residue the Diacetyl
produces in the ear, can be smelled in the wax from the ear, and it smells like burned popcorn, with Act I, II, etc being the worst offender, but ANY product that describes itself as being "butter flavored" is suspect.

Antihistamine and Robitussin "Guafinesen" helped our family until we began eliminating the offending products with the chemical. Watch out for Mrs. Baird's breads/ rolls/ pastries especially....we only recently began having the
problems again after routinely buying from their outlet stores after a few years' absence.

Food flavorings have been known to use this chemical as well as cake mixes. God bless you and keep you alert. : )

On Dr. Oz's tv program the other day, he said he and his family have used garlic as a home remedy for earaches. He says to insert the whole, peeled, garlic clove in the ear at bedtime. It works for them! I thought that was interesting, and as I had recently had some ear problems, I figured I'd try it the next time the ear ache hit.

May I ask what you mean by sucking in and pushing out? Does this mean swallowing deeply or sucking air deeply in and out of the mouth? I am confused. I have ear trouble all the time and would appreciate a better understanding by what you mean to say to do. Awaiting your kind reply,
Bonnie

A warm hairdryer blown over the ear area will often help to ease earaches.

Easing Earaches

I had a severe ear infection and the ENT told me to wash it out with vinegar and alcohol. Sounds nasty but, oh my, it worked, the infection cleared up. I was also taking an antibiotic. I even found the remedy on Web MD. so now I keep a bottle of the concoction in the bathroom and wash my ears out daily with it. He said once you get one like that, you are predetermined to get more. but I also use the hair dryer to dry them out. (05/03/2005)

Easing Earaches

My daughter gets ear infections at least once a year (usually on the weekend when the doctor isn't in) so I put a warm wash cloth over her ear. Its a quick fix if you have a crying child on your hands.

It eases the pain until I can get her to the doctor's office. (05/03/2005)

EAR ACHE REMEDY:

Take a small piece of cotton cloth and put about a tablespoon of salt into it, tie with a string to make a kind of bag and put it into the microwave to warm, it will only take a few seconds. Touch the warm salt bag to the ear and hold there and it will take away the ear ache almost right away! Good for little children ear aches.

Easing Earaches

When my son would get an earache, he always wanted to use ice for the pain. I would argue with him because I always read that warmth would ease the pain. I never had an earache so I wouldn't know. I asked the doctor about this. He answered whatever eases the pain for him, let him use it. When my kids were sick, my doctor always told me to let them eat and drink what they wanted as long as it was nutritious. The only exception was if they had stomach problems - vomiting, diarrhea, etc. that was treated differently.
