Organizing Hair Supplies?

Between my daughter and myself, we have more rubber bands, clips, barrettes, headbands, etc than we know what to do with. I've organized and cleaned out those we don't use, but I'm still left with baskets of hair supplies. Does anyone have any recommendations to making this mess more organized? Any homemade ideas perhaps?

Fishing tackle boxes for the really tiny things. If you don't have one handy you can use margerine bowls which are stackable. Store brand yogurt containers are small enough and are stackable. These can all be decorated with contact or you can decoupage fabric scraps to match your decor.
Folger's coffee cans are plastic with snap on plastic lids. They too can be decoupaged.

Sewing boxes and cutlery trays make great organizers for small things. A hanging shoe bag is good for the larger ones.

I keep my hair accessories and make-up in a bedroom drawer. I use small plastic trays to organize and divide them. I have a long tray which runs along one side in which I keep hair-clips and slides. Inside (on top of the clips) I have used empty cardboard tubes (from kitchen-towels) to thread all my elastics and barettes along.

I simply lift the tube when looking for clips/slides). Much tidier and easy to slide off whichever band you want to use.

Some years ago there was a program called the Home show. Carol duvall ws the craft person on there. She made a wall hanging with ribbons hanging rom the top and some loops to snap on the sides. The hair clips were put on the hanging ribbons and the scrunchies in the side loops. This way all the hair accessories could be seen at a glance.

For your small things, like earrings, rings, small hair clips, you can use ice cube trays from the Dollar Tree. I think you can get 2 or 3 in a pack there, and that'd give you plenty of space.

Or, you can look at their other plastic containers.

I put each type of bobby pin, long, short, etc into separate containers, same for scrunchies, ponytail holders and tiny elastic bands. I use the disposable plastic containers made by "Glad" or similar company's. I keep a separate shallow container for the acessories I use everyday. You can put the lids on and stack them or just line them up on your dresser or bathroom counter. I have found this to be very convenient. With myself, my daughter-in-law and 3 granddaughters with long hair this has proved to be the most efficient way to stay orhanized.

Are you sure you really use everything you didn't get rid of? Maybe you could try putting most of the items away for a month and use only a select few and see what happens--maybe you don't need to organize and keep up with all of those afterall.

For my elastic hairbands, I use a Discovery Toys "boomerang link" to keep them all together.

I have four girls and including me - that's five girls with long hair. I got a small board and 6 pegs - drilled 6 holes about 1.5- 2 inches apart for the pegs to fit in. We keep our colored elastics organized on the pegs. One or two colors for each peg - peg 1 is pinks/reds, peg 2 is oranges/yellows, peg 3 is greens, peg 4 is blues, peg 5 is purples and peg 6 is black and white.

Make the pegs as tall as you need for your supplies. I have loved it. It's easy to find the color you're looking for. We also wear barretts. I have a long ribbon and close the barretts on the ribbon. It's easy to see what we have.

For hair "TOOLS" Like hair brushes, combs & curling rods, I like to use one of those "Stand-up" kind of silverware organizer. But for scrunchies, clips & hair combs, I like to use the "lay-down" type of silverware organizer. These are often sold at thrift stores & $dollar stores!

* But for my make-up, my favorite organizer is one of those plastic 3 drawer "dressers" that you can sit on your counter or vanity. I put my lipsticks & blush in one drawer, my eye make-up in another & my foundations & face powers in the third. Now I can ALWAYS find my make-up. Not like when it was all over the place in a drawer!

* I use the very same type of 3 drawer "dresser" (they come in many sizes) for my granddaughters LARGE collection of hair things: Barrettes in one, scrunchies, hair ties& ribbons in another & head-bands in the third. You can't beat it for $3.99 - $5.99 at Walmart or Big Lots!

---> They work great for kids craft supplies & office supplies on your desk or computer area too!

I DO NOT like tackle boxes for hair or make up. I guess it's because I'm always in a hurry & don't want to hassle with having to open it up, then open the trays, then close it all back up again. I like speed & simplicity & also a bit larger sized drawers. But if you were going on vacation, I suppose a tackle box would work to transport your make-up & hair care stuff.

As for necklaces & earrings. I made my daughter a bulletin board to hang on her bathroom (or bedroom) wall: I use 2 pieces of foam-board ($1 store) & covered it with a matching piece of fabric (or wrapping paper) then hung it from a a braided piece of yarn. She uses ball-head fabric pins to hang & organize her necklaces goodies. She also cuts out "eye-make-up" ideas out of fashion magazines & posts them here!

Once a friend knit strips about a inch wide really not sure of the length. Put like a car ring on it you could use any loop she made two and put them on the same loop. she got a round basket not to deep and criss crossed it on the bottom. I hung it in my bathroom by a plant hook you can stretch the knit straps to make it where you can reach it I put the scrunches in the basket.

I loved clip bows then I hung them on the straps. On the basket I hung the clips later I took ribbon and thread it through the basket and hung barrettes and small clips on it. An old shower hook on one for pony tail bands. It was a lot of fun she made me another one for my daughter and knit the hooks in it for her passes and things.

She now uses those hooks for necklaces and hair things.
I have a basket also in my bathroom; like a picnic basket, the top open on both ends. I was using also for hair things. Now I use it for toilet paper. It is close at hand and hidden. Have fun like this site. Great ideas here.

I washed out a peanut butter jar for my daughters. It clear and plastic with a screw off lid it works great. We keep it in a pocket in the shoekeeper we use to hold or bathroom things

I use the small 3 drawer storage container for most of my hair supplies. I but small platic ziploc bags and sort the different items and then catorgorize them in the different drawers. I also use an empty oatmeal box for my hair bands and a small child's belt for my scrunchies. Works great!

Just wanted to say thank you to Dana in Michigan for her brilliant peg-board idea - five girls with long hair? No wonder she needs to be organised!
