Altering a Knit Top That is Too Large?

How do I make smaller, a size large knit top (not woolen)?

I start at about the elbow on the inside seam and graduate the sewing to about an inch in the armpit area then go down the side of the garment to the hem. This reduces the diameter of the garment by 4". I'll trim the excess quite close then zigzag or overstitch to finish the edge. If you have a serger you're ahead of the game.
