Mama used it to bath, wash dishes, used in the washing machine when she couldn't afford washing detergent. Also, a Dr. told us that it is the perfect treatment for poison oak. Simply bath in it to stop itching; but I have never tried it since I don't seem to be bothered with it. I am soon to be 64 so I guess you could say it is an old timey solution to a problem. But to answer your question, yes, you can bath in it as long as it doesn't irritate you. Blessings on your day.

Hi Elaine,

I'm 12 years older than GrannyGirl, and have been bathed with my Mother's Octagon Laundry Bars many times including shampooing my long hair. She always poured water with a few TBS of apple cider vinegar over our hair as a rinse, and as far as I know, it must have been good for us. We thrived.

Octagon soap is still the best laundry soap on the market although it takes a bit of time to chop it all up and get it melted down to go into today's washing machines. If you're willing to do it and have the time, it's also a great way to "spot clean" all the greasy stains off clothing before putting them through the washer with any kind of laundry detergent.

So, yes, you can use it as a body soap. You might not like the "fragrance" of it at first, but it's a very clean fragrance, and you'll be squeaky clean, hair and all.

Some people may have ultra sensitive skin which might require using a milder soap, but most of us will do just fine using Octagon if we can find it.

I keep a bar in the laundry now, and one in the kitchen as well. It's great for cleaning woodwork and countertops , etc. I grew up with Octagon and Fels Naptha Soap bars, so I still associate cleanliness with those fragrances.

Good Luck,

Soap can be very harsh on the skin and generally doesn't rinse well. It should never be used on the hair. I have sensitive skin and soap actually stings me. It may have to do with the pH balance or something. I definitely wouldn't use it on a child. Hope this helps.
