Putting Hair in a Ponytail?

Would someone please give me instructions on how to make an ordinary ponytail? I have shoulder-length fine hair. When I make a ponytail to keep it out of my face it looks like I've had an eyebrow lift! Nothing but the aging hipster look, instead of something softer looking for my hair above the ponytail. Instead of a flat, pulled-back cap, I'd like to have a bit more of a softer look framing my face. Thank you all.

Don't pull your hair back so tight.

With fine hair, using a bit of hair product will help to add some volume and texture to your hair.

You can also do some variations on the standard pony.
Take the front/top of your hair, leaving the top rear, sides and back to hang free. Pull that top/front part into a mini ponytail, not too tightly! Bring it forward just a touch to add a but of "pouf" and use bobby pins(one from each side) to hold it on place instead of allowing the ponytail to hold it.

Pull large tendrils from the sides of your head, just below the temples. Bring them back into a high ponytail at the back of your head. Again, add bobby pins to secure them instead of expecting the ponytail to do that job. Let the ponytail be ornamental instead of functional.

Part your hair in back, into two equal sections. Pull, one at a time, into a ponytail at the side, smoothing hair with your hands as you "work" the tail forward until it is just behind your ear about mid-height. Gently twist the hair(toward the center) and again work with your hands to lay it flat against your head and back toward the nape.

You'll do the same with the other side, and then join them together into one ponytail in the center. You may want to secure the twist with a few small bobby pins along the length of the twist.Use a claw clip to hold the first side in place while you work the second side. Remove the claw clip before joining the two.

To touch off that elegant ponytail, don't just use a plain elastic band. There are so many pretty ornamental ones available(as you can see, I have a small online shop which sells them - promo alert!).

Remember that with the fine hair, you may need to add texturizer, and even a bit of hair spray - just enough to help a bit with the holding power and smooth any flyaways. Even your simple ponytail will be more manageable with the hair product. And bobby pins(small, colored to match your hair) are your friend!

If you find it just impossible to figure out without help, call around to a few hair salons and see if you can't book some time with a stylist to have them tutor you in some of the ideas I mentioned above.

What about putting in a couple of velcro curlers at the crown of your head and spraying them with a bit of hairspray to give you volume. After a few minutes, take them out - or leave in as long as you can-then pull your hair into a ponytail taking care not to pull too tight at the crown?

You can use a knitting needle or other smooth point to lift the hair on top of your head. Work by sections. Another idea for a dressier look: take one section of hair from the ponytail, about pencil thick, and wrap it around the ponytail holder and secure with a hairpin and a little spray if needed.

This completely hides the elastic and looks like a pro did it. You can put an ornament over that if you like, such as a crystal sparkly bracelet wrapped on.

I wear my hair in a ponytail almost every day, and if I pull it back too tight, I always end up with a headache. I simply brush my hair back from my face, gathering it up in my other hand at the base of my neck, and then I take my hair tie, and wrap it 3-6 times depending on how big it is. This also helps keep the tie in good condition and reduces the tie being stretched-out, and keeps it from pulling out hair at the end of the day. hope this helps.

Thank you all! I think I found the remedy:
I wrap the thicker sized ponytail holder twice, normally--then, on the third time, I just pull the hair out halfway as a loop.

This keeps my hair from being too tight on my head and also makes a clean looking little tail.
The end part of the hair actually keeps the little loop pushed up instead of just lying flat.

Thank you all again!

Me, I don't like the ponytail look. Not for someone my age, 50, so I go for a more classy look. I like to hold my hair back with a barrette with a bow on it. I like the bow look, for someone my age, I have worn the bigger more fluffy tieback ponytail things, but not tight ones. I still prefer the barrette bows. They are not easy to find anymore, so I make my own. I do like my long hair and will let it grow even longer but the bows give a softer more classy look.
