You should start right away. At first just get them used to the idea by putting the leash on them for even a few minutes at a time and gently pulling them around on it. Then you can graduate to taking them outside on the leash. They'll get used to it. Good luck :)

You can start now. Please either go to your local pet store for lessons, ask your vet for referrals, go to the library and get e book in leash training, or my personal favorite...hire a trainer to come to your house to assist you.

We used to raise Goldens. As soon as they were able to walk around and start to play with one another we would put soft collars on them. Tie short strands of gauze(about 8 inches worked) through the ring of the collar. They would pull the strands of gauze while they were playing.

This got them used to the feel of something around their neck, not to mention being a lot of fun to watch! Most of them were leash trained,or well on their way, by the time they went to their new homes. We would put them on during the day when we could watch them.

Start training them now. They are at the perfect age for leash and other training. With dachshunds, the best way is to put the collar and leash on them and start walking at a slow pace (their little legs are so short!). If the puppy pulls on the leash then simply stop and wait until he quits pulling.

Once he does stop pulling, immediately praise him wildly and reward him. Then take a few more steps. They are stubborn so it may take a while, but they'll soon learn to associate the leash with a fun walk.
