Smoothing Rough Edges

Lots of crafts have to have smooth edges. We cut glass and smooth edges. We cut plastic and other items and have a smooth edge. How do we do this? We simply take a piece of sandpaper and run the bottom at an angle along the ends, and like magic it is all smooth.
